i have seen some Xjs with 231 TCs and manual hubs(not sure if the TC matters) and i was wondering how to do this swap and what all i required. im hoping this eliminates my vacuum engaged 4wd because imho it blows. it works for right now but they are crackin badly i think.

Ummmm ...

What year is your XJ? Does it have "Command-Trac" or "Selec-Trac"?

Up through 1990 the Command-Trac XJs had a vacuum disconnect on the right front axle shaft. The transfer case itself does not use vacuum to engage or to disengage, and the HUBS are not locking/unlocking (automatic) hubs. There were never any XJs sold by the factory with manual locking hubs.

The transfer case used with Command-Trac was the 231 from 1987 and up, but prior to 1987 it was a 207. There were other transfer cases used as "Selec-Trac," which is why we need to know what year your XJ is before giving a more definitive answer.

Sounds like you've been given some slightly confusing and incorrect information so far.

Manual locking hubs are an aftermarket item......I think the switch costs about $700.00. I don't realy recall the price though. I know of one other XJ with the hubs..and he switched because of his Detroit in the front ( not an off-road only Cherokee.) And it allows for 2wd low...
Good luck..

If you saw a Cherokee with manual hubs it either A: Had an after market hub kit (Approx> $800) for the D30 or B: Swapped in another axle. B: being the better choice. The TC you have is not an issue with the hubs at all.

If you want to rid your XJ of the vaccum disco BS then you can remove the vacuum hardware and use a one-piece shaft. Your frontend will not be unlocked like having manual hubs but you will not need to worry about engaging the vacuum anymore when putting your TC in 4wd.

well fudge. i was hoping it would be cheaper. i dont really feel like doing axle swaps just yet. although i do have a HP D44f and a Ford 9" rear available to me. just not neough time to do the swap and my xj is a daily driver anyways. well there went that idea. i guess i will just replace all the vacuum lines with new ones that way i know they are good lines.
