New gears are in

After having the parts sitting in my garage now for a couple of months I finally had a chance to install the new gears in the rear. I still have the front to do this weekend so I'm not really done yet. But what a difference it's made. I took out a set of 4.10's and put in 4.88's so it can handle the 35" MTR's a little better. Now it actually feels like I'm accelerating off the stoplights instead of just barely rolling. And I can actually drive on something other than down hills without the tranny down-shifting out of overdrive. :yelclap: Now all I have to do is install the front set so I can hook up my front driveline again, weld on new rear spring perches to replace the bent stock ones, cut off and weld on new swaybar mounts on the front axle, then figure out whats "popping" in the front end when I turn, and I'll be set!! Maybe I'll even get to test it on a trail sometime before next years Swamp Lake run !?! Yea, not likely but I can hope...

Sounds good Rob, yeah 4.88 gears as a lot nicer with 35's than 4.10's. Many people get my with stock gears (3.55 with the auto trans) for way to long and your tranny and gas mileage suffer as well as the excitement of accelerating. What axles are you running?

For now I'm still running the stock 30/35 combo, but run a 30 spline kit in the 35. I'm also fairly gentle with the skinny pedal when wheeling so I don't have to change any shafts.
I've read were some people run the stock 3.55's with 35's. I don't know how they can do that. The lack of power with 4.10's was driving me nuts. Stock gears must feel like your dragging a large boat along with you everywhere you go.

I drove my brother-in-law's 91' XJ with 4.0L and auto tranny with 3.55 gears with 35" Bias MT BAJA claws as well as his new 35x13.50x15 Toyo MTs and it was o.k. You just need to give it some gas. I didn't drive it on the highway though, just surface streets. The 4.88s are much better though.
