Ok,

I recently installed a new to me Golen motor in my DD street oriented XJ and I have run into an issue. Like the title of the thread says I need brakes.

The stockers are marginal with a stock setup XJ, and with the engine in place (and a host of other mods yet to come) the factory brakes are actually scary.

I have read through several dozen differnet threads and I am now only more confused.

Here is what I think I know

1. It will very soon get an Explorer 8.8 w/disks in the rear
2. The wheels will be upsized to 17"
3. It will get dropped +-2" (waiting for the flames)
4. Some people have made Mustang, Crown Vic, Mustang R, Focus, Focus R, front disc/calipers work, but I cannot seem to paint a clear picture in my mind of what parts are needed.
5. ditto WJ setups

Really appreciate any guidence given. FYI I can buy new parts (maybe), or I can scrounge the junkyards, or combinations therein.

WJ knuckles/steering is your best bet.

Or, if you have money to spend there is a big brake kit available.

This is correct. XJeeper made a thread with just about every detail you could want to know on the swap, its a good read with lots of pics.

Vanco makes the big brake kit, supposedly it's badass but it is very pricey.

I hate to link to another forum, but here is more information and some reviews on the Vanco kit

The VANCO kit looks interesting. $750 doesn't seem too bad.

Tried to go on Boostwerks site to see if they still had the adaptor for Mustang brakes, but it needs a password now?:dunno:

You didn't list year or tire size in your profile,
There is a booster upgrade for the early XJ that many have found very useful. This is IMO a must and first upgrade for any early XJ to try before mayor surgery on the brakes and would stll help if you do instill big brakes.
I know, not as sexy as big disks all the way around but it works.
