need tachometer

i have a 96 with zero options, and instead of a tachometer i have the huge gas gauge which kinda sucks for long road trips.Id like to know what rpms im pushing. I thought about doing a gauge cluster swap but ive heard alot of good and alot of bad outcomes with that, like gas gauge not working correct or speedometer jumping, and i definately dont want my mileage on my odometer to be different. so my question is would it be just as easy to buy an aftermarket tachometer to install and be done with it? thats all i want is a tachometer i already have aftermakret water press oil and volt meters.
also if anyone can point me in the direction of some good brands of gauges...

Not sure about the aftermarket gauge route, but I had no problems with a full cluster swap in my old 92. I had to replace the oil pressure sensor, and the coolant temp sensor in the back of the head, and viola, no other problems. If you decide to go that route, I'd be happy to help out if I can.

Installing an aftermarket tach is pretty simple. There are various types available that take the signal from either a plug wire (I am not big on this type) or a coil hookup. There are ususally 4 wires (neg, coil, light and + switched power) to hook up, and a switch for the correct number of cylinders. Any of the higher quality guage manufacturerd make good ones....

Beyond that, it is just a matter of getting one to fit in the area you are looking to install into.

im going the aftermarket route and now i just need to know what some good brands are...
