I will need to remove a stock rear tire carrier next sat from a vehicle (not mine).... Anyone has a quick rundown on removal of it from an 1984 cherokee??? I am planning to use it on my 98 for carrying gerry cans and such (my rear tire has a nice setup inside for now :) :)

Tire Carrier

Taking off the tire carrier is very simple. We did it in a few minutes at the junkyard. Access to the hinge mounts is behind the right side plastic panel. There are a couple of backing plates with welded nuts on them. Don't forget to take the anti-rattle rubber piece which is bolted on inside the rear hatch. The hinge mounts are a little on the weak side and tend to deform the sheetmetal with heavy loads so you might want to make stronger one. If you both still have stock rear bumpers you might just swap them instead of trying to make a new hole in yours. There is one of the XJ sites with a couple of guys that put one on but with all the links I have I can't sort it out.
