Discovered a busted axleshaft u-joint and quite certainly a unit bearing failure on my heep today after feeling and hearing some nastiness from the front left wheel area...

This all started at highway speeds on Edens!!!

Damn wheel wobbles all over the place when jacked up!

I've never done either job and wanted to know if anybody with the know-how and a few tools could guide me thru this...

Friday afternoon?

Saturday or Sunday?

My place would be great since I'm kinda leery of driving it besides home from work...

irving park/kostner area on NW side of Chicago

Thanks

love to be there...

but Chicago is much too far...

12pt 14mm? <-- (not sure on size) socket, 36mm socket with BIG breaker bar, and a sledge hammer are your firend...

when you get the new unit hub, its also a good idea to get 3 new bolts to hold it on, incase you decide to hit them on the head to get the old hub out and mushroom the head...

if the u-joint is toast, then also check the shaft ears for true-ness before you throw a new joint in... if the joint just slides in real easy - something isnt right...

good luck and if you need any help, give me a call...

(check your PM's)

with BIG breaker bar (4' piece of black pipe works great) just make sure it big enought to slide over your breaker bar.

If you put it back together with anti-sieze it'll be much easier to repair the next time.

If you could limp it out here, we could get it in the garage on friday or saturday. Otherwise, feel free to give me a call with any questions, too. You know the number...

But on Sunday, I'll be totally unavailable with my folks retirement party going on.

Hey Gil.....

Head for the Member's Forum, and look for the sticky labelled "Password info for Members Only areas (roster, tech articles, chat)" You'll find a good article in there about replacing axle shaft u-joints.

Its not too hard. 36mm hub nut socket. Be prepared to beat the unit bearing off the knuckle.

I will see what is going on Saturday.

Gil ... dammit ... You know "Meatfest" always has fallen during my spring project season. The last two years I had to push to get them done in time for a "planned" trip. Just keep having "Meatfest" ... one day I'll make it and sample your meat! :kissyou:

Yer welcome too Ramsey ... :)

IMO ... it's too bad Jeep did not apply some of this to strategic areas and bolts when they built these machines. Sure would make our lives easier.

I think Les liked my meat.
Remember Rev polishing Les' shaft?

Feel the love.

We most certainly did, wink wink nudge nudge, know what I mean? :laugh3:

The fireworks afterwards were great too!

I don't wrench but know someone who does.

Saturday is best, hell bring your junk and meat out to our place, the garage in roomy and heated and we just got a new grill.

thanks for the offer Phunky...

I'm lucky I made it into my driveway...

It's going to stay there until fixed...

Seriously lucky...

I know it's not going to be pretty when I survey the damage...

My calipers were smoking when I parked it...
