Ok, so I posted this in OEM tech, but I figure maybe some of you guys don't bother with OEM stuff (I usually don't), So I'll try it here too. I've got an '86 XJ with a 3" lift. Since I put the lift in, the front driveshaft has been noisy. Only in 4x, low and high. It's got the cv style joint on the T-case side (looks like a front wheel drive car axle). Now, I have an '84 sitting in the back yard. It's got the 228 T-case, a disco front axle, and a double-cardan front shaft. Will the shaft from a 228/disco axle combo fit a 207/non-disco axle? Or are the output yokes on the 2 cases different? Any help would be great!

Are the u-joints ok? When you put your lift on, the increased angle on the drive shaft can make worn u-joints complain.

As for whether the drive shaft from the other XJ will fit, grab your tape measure and go look.

there was one bad joint, but I replaced it. I would've already measured the shaft, but the donor rig is currently resting on the unibody as the suspension was torn out of it, so I was just hoping for a quicker and easier way to find out. But as I am coming to understand, when building a trail rig there are no easy ways!

I went through 3 of those stock shafts after I lifted my 85 model...luckily they were cheap from the pick n pull...you will need to change the yoke on the TC for the DC shaft to work...the yoke on the 207 is 26 spline...pull the one off the other TC and check it.

The front shaft you have needs to be re-adjusted to be a little longer after a lift or the the balls in the joint will travel outside of the retainer clip. If this has already happened you'll need to rebuild the joint or get another from the bone yard. If you do this, you still need to lengthen it or you'll do the same thing to the new/rebuilt shaft again.
