name that tick

Is there any oil in it? What's the pressure on the gauge? My guess is really bad lifters or low oil level/pressure, doesn't sound right for a rod knock.

Who checks oil? I was thinking maybe exhaust because it pulses a little out the tailpipe but whe I got home and revved the engine it went away, I'll check the level torrid but the pressure is good according to the 21 year old gauge

Sounds like an exhaust leak, maybe piston slap?, could be valvetrain noise.

Doesn't sound like a rod to me though.

Oh and replace that brake line.

I am putting in extended lines when I get my lazy ass to Billy's to get the stuff

When I swap the intakes I was planning on a new header but if I can say its th engine I would put the money there

I meant the rust one, not the rubber one :spin1:

Probably a good idea either way though. Got a spare header with a crack around? Bring it by sometime and I'll toss some sloppy ass welds on it, I did that to the one I put in my XJ 25k miles ago and it was still sealed up perfectly when I checked it Sunday with the motor out for repairs.

I'm not dead set on it being an exhaust leak, it doesn't sound quite right for one to me either, but I've heard some real clattery sounding exhaust leaks before and it's so much easier to check than engine internals so I'd look there first, being lazy.

New guy at work used to weld bridges for MA and CT, I'll check the oil and maybe swap it to a thicker one

Found an old thread in here that suggested revving engine to 3k, as soon as mine hit 2500 it stopped, unfortunately I don't think I even make it to 2k on my whopping mile drive to work, guess I'll just hammer it out of my driveway every morning

check the oil pressure with a manual guage and switch to 10w oil if not there already, if you have good oil pressure then check your valve lash, those are cheap and simple to do, its awfully loud and solid to be an exhaust leak, if your oil pressure is low then throw in a stock replacement oil pump, as the high flow pumps will pool oil in the valve cover at higher rpms without oil passage mods

If I got better mileage I'd drive to boston and slap you

I'm glad someone else finally said that so I could stop trying to think of names for ticks.

My hearing isn't what it used to be. I finally got a chance to put on the headphones and listen. It sure sounds metallic to me. It doesn't sound like a rod knock, its too high a frequency. It never hurts to do a wet/dry compression check and maybe a leakdown check for good measure. I would pull the valve cover and see if you can track it down from there.

Heck I saw a cracked flexplate make that type of noise once. Get yourself a 4 ft chunk of garden hose and use it like a stethoscope.

If I rev to 2400 it goes away but there is still a put put coming out of the tail pipe like there is a miss in the engine, got the jeep just to last the winter so when it gets warm ill tune it up and all that crap
