My wheel fell off

So i was on my way to work this AM and It sounded like a real bad U joint all at once. So went to pull over and got to about 10 mph and bam the back drivers side wheel falls off and rolls past me. So i got it towed home and after work took a look. two studs where sheared off and the other 3 were rattling around inbetween the rotor and the backing plate. (ZJ disk conversion). not sure what could cause this but I sure am glad I slowed down write away. At 60 mph or so this could have been a disaster.
FYI I do run wheel spacers :gag:I know bad Idea but no choice till I can get some wheels with better BS. but it was still atached to the wheel and the wheel studs on the axle shaft are the ones that are jacked up.

eesh, that sucks. i had a wheel fall off of my sas'd ranger a few years ago. it sucked. i was goin 90 on i25, scared the crap out of me. amazingly i weaved my way thru traffic and picked up all my lugnuts and put the wheel back on. i feel ya man. it sucks.

Don't you hate it when that happens?

well I just got it all back together had to pull both shafts in order to get the locker out and then use my spare shaft. the holes for the studs were all wallered out.

Glad you came outta that ok!

Sounds like you were driving with that spacer loose for a little while. The fact that the lug nuts for the spacer are pinched between the wheel and the spacer pretty much makes for a bad situation for the lug studs - that's why the axle flange had lug stud holes wallowed out - the studs sat there loose and rocked back and forth under driving loads and they had to push their way into the brakes.

Gotta love C-clip axles huh? (locker removal required) :looney:

Sounds like you were driving with that spacer loose for a little while.Ya but what I can't figure out is how they got loose I used red locktite on em to prevent that from happening. Oh well probley never know The fact that the lug nuts for the spacer are pinched between the wheel and the spacer pretty much makes for a bad situation for the lug studs - that's why the axle flange had lug stud holes wallowed out - the studs sat there loose and rocked back and forth under driving loads and they had to push their way into the brakes.

Thing is, anytime you mix steel parts with aluminum parts, heat, friction, vibration will eventually allow them to move to some degree. Early versions of engines using steel blocks and aluminum heads all had their issues with staying tight/sealed.

I imagine even with locktite, this will eventually happen unless a person is religious with a schedule to check the torque on the lug nuts.

What brand of spacer? About the only spacer I'd trust is Spydertrax. All others are inferior IMHO.

Didnt that happen to you more then once?

You may be thinking about the time he was enroute to CO Fest and his rear locker locked up sending him off the road.......... ?

I've run aluminum spacers for years on multiple vehicles, without a religious scheduled to check on them (you all know how I feel about most things religious) -- RED locktite is your friend, as well as making sure you propertly torque them down the first time around. I generally have checked them abuot 1000 miles after first install, and then whenever I rotate the tires. I have never had a single nut loose on my spacers. YMMV.:yap:

No, luckily just the one time.............:gag:

Your right. :confused1

Remind me to never ride with DJ while driving to and from the trail. Even his DD has problems!:kissyou:

Yup they are spidertrax. Oh well chalk it up as a lesson learned not sure what the lesson is but be sure I'll check em more often.

Been there and done that.......... damn defective spacer/adapter that seperated at 50 mph!! The worst part for me was watching my driver side rear cross into incomming traffic and seeing people swerving to get out of the way............:scared:

Ya that could be bad for sure. If it hit just right could kill somebody pretty easy.
