My Demo/Build thread

You're just jealous of us. You with your red XJ. Stop hating and get yourself a white one. Everyone else has. :moon::roll:

I knew it was only a matter of time before my local WHITE xj's found this....you or DrRandy....:wave1:

White XJ's RULE!!!!!!

so.... does it still count as white if it gets painted, only the exterior? i haven't done this yet, but it's on the build sheet.:banghead:

Dragging this build thread up from the dead as the Jeep has been getting a little love. I will update what I have done to it over the past few weeks, and im sure Latney has also done some things that he may want to add.

Latney brought me his Jeep with a list of things he wanted done, as he is getting ready to build it fully. The list for me on this round of work included:

1. Installing front, middle, and rear frame stiffeners compliments of HD Offroad Engineering.

2. Installing HD Offroad Engineering Shackle Relocation Brackets

3. Building a custom front bumper based off of a picture of a Warn bumper Latney provided.

4. Rebuild a Warn 8274 Winch that Latney purchased used, and install on the above bumper.

5. Remove and replace rusted out section of the passenger side floor board with patch panels.

The rest will be a picture show, including a limited narrative as I see fit.

Here is the Jeep before anything was done, at my shop:

First up, the Frame Stiffeners:

These are pretty straight forward, Ive done 2 or 3 sets of the center stiffeners, but had yet to do all three front, center and rear on an XJ. I have a full set for my XJ, and need to put them on so this was good 'practice' if you will. :)

Got the Shacle Relocation Brackets installed, welded them in. Not many pictures, but you get the idea. The Shackle that Latney had on there ended up being far to tall for the stock spring pack, and stock shocks, so I eventually put a stock set of XJ shackles back on just until he gets the suspension figured out.

Moving on to the bumper. Latney sent me a few pictures of a Warn style bumper that he liked, and asked that I follow a similar styling. Of course, the Warn bumper is designed around a standard bottom mount winch, and the 8274 winch is a front mount upright style, so the center section of the bumper would end up being a little different due to the winch we were putting on it.

Now, is when I started the winch rebuild. Turns out the winch needed a little more new parts that orginally though, but Latney would still end up with a BADA$$ winch at half the cost of a new one.

Lastly, I replaced a few sections of the passenger floor panel, due to rot.

Hand forming/stretching a few panels. This is 18 gage.

Sprayed some rust reformer/primer on it, and we are done.

Absolutely beautiful craftsmanship. I wish I had 1/10th the skill you have.

Great job Stump!

What are the plans for the drivetrain/suspension?

beautiful bumper. how much does it weigh?? looks beefy

Very well done. x2 on what Ed said!

Thanks Ed! Im honestly not entirely sure about the question. I know we have talked about it, but im not certain that Latney is 100% certain at this point. I know he bought an axle from Tim, and that may go in? I know I brought a set of very heavy lift leaf springs from Mark back from Harlan for him...

Thanks! It probably weighs around 65-70 pounds, based on others I have built and weighed. I didnt weigh this one. I put it up on the Jeep by myself while it was up on the lift with minimal issue. Its not light, but I have seen heavier. Only the center section (between the frame rails) is 1/4", the rest is 10 gage. Of course, while the winch is a BEAST, its also not light. I know Latney plans to put on a Synthetic rope, which will help.

Thanks Glenn, im pleased with it all. Hope Latney is too. :greensmok

I knew he had some parts but wasn't sure if he was going to go a different direction.

I'm surprised you didn't work your magic on his rear quarters.

Looks great Stump!

Those are fun winches to rebuild and "restore"... I love mine!

Looks awesome! Can't wait to get it home for a while - we finally got the driveway finished (ok, ALMOST finished) and have a place to park it!
