Is this msd coil MSD 8228 a drop in replacement coil for my 1990 xj? I'm looking to do a tuneup on it and would like to put a super coil in it while I'm replacing parts. If this isn't a drop in replacement does anyone know of a drop in replacement super coil?

Thanks

IF you go to summit or jegs, and select your vehicle and go to the ignition parts you will find the correct coil.
From what most say, the stock IGN system for RENIX is pretty much all you need. And I wouldn't see the coil doing much better without an aftermarket ign, box.

The stock coil is perfect for stock use, you can even wire a msd box to it, but it will half life your coil. If you are just doing a tune-up, test your spark. If it is weak replace the wires and plugs. then if it is STILL weak, then replace the coil.

you could just about use any aftermarket coil, just use the - and + terminal from the original coil mount, thats what I did along with the msd6 box.

This is the ONLY real advantage of the suoercoil. That it cools itself much better then most stock coils. So it can put up with the higher out put of the superbox and other high performance boxs.
But it is a sweet looking dressup thing
