Mounting a bike rack up front of XJ

Going camping tomorrow and wondered if doing this was legal. Would hate to mount the bike rack to the front bumper and get pulled over for it being a no-no. Taking my son and my little bros up to Big Bear and Camping @ Serrano so the inside of the jeep will be full and the spare tire in the rear wont allow for the bike rack to be mounted out back. I could throw one or 2 of the smaller bikes up top but not all 4. Hence why i need to place them somewhere else.

If nothing else, ill have them take their scooters. No biggie.

As long as it doesn't block your blinkers and head lights.you are good.I think for day time they won't say chit about your head lights.

Yeah, i think ill find a way to extend the rear to clear the tire carrier. Or i could find a spot for the tire inside but then it be too packed. Ill figure it out.

You fixed the spare tire rack?

Also the rock sliders too.

yep! Now STFU and E.A.D!

When are you leaving? I can make you a fork mounted bike rack to hold one bike pretty quickly that would clear your spare tire

I looked at doing this myself not long ago. With the bikes in the rack it blocked a good portion of my view of the road up front. Didn't seem safe.

All you need is a standard cab Chevy!! Why load a Jeep? hahaha

Serious though, I see buses do it all the time....should be legal. Not the best looking, but legal. (looking for pic of Beverly HillBillies)

I made one for my rear bumper with my tire carrier, but not sure if it would work on yours. If you were closer you could come try it out. Who knows if that bumper would support a bike anyhow!

Here's Sequoia's Jeep in Moab circa 2006. Cracker, slowrider, Remi, and I went mountain biking on Porcupine Rim. Remi was hurting pretty bad, so Avery rode ahead into town and got Sequoia to pick the rest of us up by the river.

I went home to get the jeep, tire carrier, bike rack. Seemed a bit high like the pic you posted. Dont know that i like it up that high. Since i have HF one i could maybe cut it to make it sit lower. but for now, ill extend the rear part and call it good.

That doesn't look like you would be able to see much. Pretty sure Highway Patrol would be all over you if they saw that.

Yeah. Visibility sucked donkey balls but we didn't go fast or far within Moab.

We had to put it on the front because of Geoff's spare tire was in the way.

I can't recall why we used Geoff's rig but I think my rig was at Outpost 4x4 getting new UCA brackets welded on the frame after I ripped them off wheeling out there. That was a while ago.

Yeah, that was a pretty funny ride back into town. Sequoia was driving with his head out the window so that he could see the road. I believe we used Sequoia's Jeep because when you went back to the campground, he was the only one there. Everybody else was out wheeling. :laugh3:

in general, im not in favor of anyone being arrested or ticketed for stuff.... but if i saw that thing on the road, i'd call CHP myself!

Should be OK as long as it doesnt obstruct your view or your vehicle is deemed unsafe. Plus, buses have them. Wouldnt really be different than a winch bumper that extends out from the front....or one of those bumpers with the pre-runner style brush guards that sticks out. Once again, as long as your view isnt obstructed to the point of where its considered "unsafe", you'll be aaight Julio.
