Mounting a 60" Hi-Lift in/on an XJ

I know there are probably 47 threads on this but I am too lazy too look for them.

I scored a brandy new 60" Hi-Lift for the donut.

Now, I just nees to figure out how in the world to mount it.

Before anyone suggests it, I do not have the $$ to buy a fancy roof rack / basket.

Simple, effective, safe ways anyone?

Pic of the rig in it's current state (sans Hi-Lift) below.

+/- 4" homebrewed lift on 31's.

i have the prefect solution for you. but i'm too lazy to post it.

Yakima sells plastic mounts that wrap around the factory rack crossbars.

Using 2 of those, I fabbed a hi lift mounts with two 3inch sections of 3x3 angle iron, a little cutting/welding and some carriage bolts with wing nuts. It goes on/off the factory rack in about 1 minute.

Not sure how to post pics, so PM me with your email addy and I'll send a couple of pics.

never mind the PM - here's my pics
I built these about 10 years ago and they're still going strong.

This pic shows the "wings" welded on the angle iron to keep the plastic mount stable and better shot of the Yakima plastic mount.

Hmmmm... THAT sounds interesting, secure, simple, safe.

Got a pic? Or a better write up? Did you re-mount the rear bumper?

What about simply bolting a 4xRac to the "face" of the rear bumper?

Is the steel thick enough to hold the weight of the Hi-Lift? Or do you think it will eventually bend or the bolts pull thru it?

shoot me a pm with your email then i could send you a pic (me and posting pics on here doesnt work all the time)

Sorry no write up, but if you see the pic you'll understand what i'm talking about.

No, I didn't remount the bumper. I would take the bumper off and mount it on the bumper brackets, maybe using the 4xRac to lock that sucker up, rather than using wingnuts.

home made mount on the factory rack - the hi-lift goes on top, held to mount by big fender washer and wing nut

One set of hood pins, drill a hole through two of the cross bars and mount the hoodpins on them. I added nylok nuts to the bottom, just to make them hard to come off. Took a $1 swim noodle and cut 4 slices off it, two go under the jack and two over. Keyed alike locks hold it on. Noodle slices keep the rattles down.
