so i was sittin at the shop today and thinkin about doin a head light retrofit .

so im starting with a pair of h4 conversion 5x7 glass lenses

and retrofitting the morimoto h1 hi-lo projector into them ..

anyone done this before ?

I don't know about that specific brand but urban yan has completed a retrofit over in the street and performance sub. I'll request the thread be moved there as it seems to make more sense.

I did this conversion just yesterday. Started with some Rampage housings and modified to accept some Morimoto H1 projectors. I am running a Morimoto bi-xenon H4 harness with Morimoto 55 watt balasts and 6000K H1 bulbs. To say I am impessed with the output is an understatement. I even put some angel eyes on them to be different and because I think angel eyes are sick!

His conversion required using drop in Projector Housings that are $600 per housing last time I checked so not an inexpensive route but easy for those who don't have any skill to do a complete retrofit.

I don't have a retrofit as much as a DOT approved kit. Damn thing cost me a pretty penny. I paid $500 for the housings and $150 for the ballasts/bulbs out of a Cadillac SRX. Than again, I bought the kit back in 2005; bi-xenons were still rare and most HID were expensive. The price of HIDs has gone down quite a bit over the years. If I had to do it today, I would definitely consider that Morimoto kit... minus the angel eyes of coarse.

I was thinking about doing this myself using this:

Sounds like what you went with. I assume it required separating the lenses from the housings? How'd that go? The light output looks awesome!

Yes that is for the most part what I went with except I have 55 watt ballasts instead of 35 watt. I put 35 watt ballasts in my cousin's 99 last week which was a near identical setup up just with 35 watt ballasts and it was definitely an improvement but I like the output of the 55 watt ballasts more and he used 4300K bulbs where mine are 6000K which I also like more but those are preferences really. I would recommend the 55 watt ballasts though you will be happier that way. The lenses do have to be separated from the housings and don't even bother sticking them in the oven or boiling them in water. Neither worked for me on my first set of housings and I shattered a lens and needed to get another set. I talked to the guys at TheRetrofitSource.com and they told me to let them sit in a bucket of gasoline. I was skeptical doing it this way but knowing what can happen the other ways I figure it was worth a try. IT WORKS!!! Each housing only needed to sit in gasoline for only maybe an hour or so and the lenses literally fell off. I went to pull the housing off and the lens just sat there at the bottom of the bucket so that really is the best and most painless way to separate the two. They only need to sit in enough gasoline to submerge where the housing and lens meet, not the entire housing, and I poured gasoline in the housing as well so that they would not float and so the gasoline can work its way in from both side of the seal. I plan to get a write-up done of my whole endeavor with tons of pictures and noting all the things I went through along the way.

Are you sure you have the Morimoto Mini H1s then? They only make two Morimoto projectors one using a H1 bulb and one using a D2S bulb.

This is the H1

The D2S projector is about 1/2" shorter than the H1 projector so it may fit without cutting up the back but the flange where the projector lens holder and the reflector housing meet is much larger than the H1 projector so it won't sit as deep in the housings as the H1. I went to TheRetrofitSource.com's actual office (I live in Atlanta where they are based out of) and looked at both the H1 and the D2S and the H1 was a better fit. Modifying the 7x6 H4 housing is unavoidable and the hole you have to cut out in the back of the header panel is a necessity in order for it all to fit. The only way you could possibly make it fit within an unmodified 7x6 housing is to modify the projector itself but that could lead to problems with reflection of the light. Or you could make your own custom vacuum formed lens that would accommodate for the extra distance that the projector sticks out but there is still the problem with how far the bulb stick out the back of the housing if you are using the H1. The D2S may be better for your application since the connector for the bulb is slimmer and more compact.

Let us know if you can somehow make it all fit I would definitely love to see another way of doing this because I have 3 more cousins with XJs that will most likely want HID projectors soon after they see mine and my other cousin's new setups.

Good luck!

Where do you get the 55w ballasts?

I'm a little slow. So what exactally do I order from the retrofit source? The drop down menus are a bit confusing. Can't find the 55w. Thanks.

I think if you are going to sell / advertise product through Naxja, you should be a sponsor. Might be in the bylaws somewhere - not that I've read them...

That would be great. One stop shopping, already done, complete ready to install. Get them on you site.

This is basically exactly what I used and most of the drop down menus are already set to what you need to complete what I did in the pictures I provided in my previous post.

The only things I changed from the pre-set drop down menus is I added CCFL Angel Eyes (not necessary for a complete retrofit, this is only an added cosmetic accessory), I went with 6000K bulbs instead of the 4300K, the Wire harness you need is the Relay: H4/9003, and the adapter plate is not applicable for this retrofit so don't even worry about that since you will be cutting up the housings in order to install these bad boys. The Morimoto Mini H1 projectors already come with mini gatling gun shrouds included no extra charge so you will not need to specify a shroud unless you want something other than gatling guns. I don't see why they don't have a 55 watt ballast option so you may need to just call them during their business ours and place an order over the phone to get the 55 watt ballasts. I picked up all my parts at their store in Atlanta, Ga. and did't order over the phone or online. They are very very helpful and I am sure they will be able to include the 55 watt ballasts without any problem. The only thing you cannot get from them are the 7x6 H4 conversion housings that you will need to modify to accept these projectors. You can pick up a set for cheap off ebay just make sure the glass lens on the housing is glass and not cheap plastic.

55watt are not recommended in smaller projector housing like morimoto and smaller fog light housing such as in hondas and passanger cars .. they get way to hot and dont have enough heat disspersion .. thats why they dont have that option .. its unsafe ..all thought it will work .. they dont want u burning down your car .. ive been workin with hids for 5 years now and they do weird things ..

as for the wiring harness u wont need that anyways the only time u need a harness is if your car needs it .. some cars wont let the hids work.. cause they are canbus systems .. which means the ecu is reading voltage at the light and the ballast are takin to much power.. this is common on most cars that want to put hids in .. like subaru .. audi .. mercedes .. these cars also need error canceling capacitors so the check bulb light will go off the dash ..

also if u install hids in your car and one turns on but the other just flickers or hummz and flickers .. u need a harness
