Moral Deliema

yea but it is owned by a card company, and they may ask how i knew it was there in the first place

Whats youre point? Please, I'm not trying to come off like a jerk but I'm amazed how so many people are afraid to ask these sorts of questions because "I'm afraid they'll figure out what I'm up to." Who cares if they do, they aren't going to tattle tale on you or hollar at you for going up there, odds are theyll be glad someone respects their land, asked polietly about the truck they "heard from a friend" needs removal and if they make a big deal about you bieng there then they're jerks and you say good day to 'em and would rather not know them anyhow. You laugh about it later that day.

So if you really do want the truck go find the person in charge and enquire about it, leave youre purse at home though. (joke)

not me man, that's for sure. Just went thru this with that abondoned F350 on Fordyce. Just get the thing off the trail, because it WILL be torched and further vandalized which is a far greater sin than grabbing an already-written-off insurance-owned vehicle that will never be removed by the insurance company. flat bed that fawker out and part it out

mark bring wheels + lugs with you to work on friday and we'll go grab it after :laugh3:

Um yeah,
I will bring a friggen tow strap, but how we gonna get it home?
Bad idear to tow that all the way home with a strap.. we need a trailer... what is breyer upto?

You must have a hell of a lot of free time on your hands if you're planning on rebuilding that. I don't see anything on that and you'll be lucky if the frame isn't tweaked jusging by how the rest of it looks. If I were you, I think I'd just leave that there and let the police tow it out. If you want a TJ, go buy one, it'll be a lot cheaper than building that from the ground up. Thats just my opinion though.

who said anything about rebuild? Have you seen the price on a TJ? that piece as is would pull $1500.
besides it would only take probebly three days to have it running,
and maybe 6 to have it rolling.
and then we make a buggy out of it.
why rebuild somthing that is going to be beat on rocks anyway?

hmm we could build a tube cage...

yeah thats what im talkin about...bugy. competition cut the tub, build some flatties for the front, just build a little tube frame for the windshield and use some lexan. it'd look 100 times better just powerwashed and all the crap removed. muduck i think you might be on to something with that tube idea....i called the PD and dispatch said they'd call me back, but they havn't so im gonna go knock on some doors. finding the property owner shouldnt be too hard cuz the property has a for sale sign and a #..so i'll just call them and find out. yeah its gonna take a little :repair:

Be aware the liability difference between recovery on private vs. public land.

On public land the government has zero liability if you get hurt, and has few concerns with removal (other than to protect the habitat). You should ask permission, but if the legal title is clear you have the same right as any owner's agent to recover the vehicle (you do not need explicit permission on a public right of way).

On private land the owner's legal council (if asked for a position) may raise liability concerns, and prevent you from recovering the vehicle. The owner may want to see liability insurance to cover your effort (like the insurance a towing company carries).

These concerns are after legal title is resolved (determined stolen, and/or after the insurance company or owner releases interest). You do not want to risk possession of stolen property (even if it's a good deed).

The SBNF OHV-Volunteer group I am involved with has recovered over forty vehicles in the SBNF in the last ten years. Almost all have been reported stolen (all but the few found with dry occupants still inside the vehicle), and legal title (and other investigation) had to be cleared first.

In some cases the insurance company offered to pay for the recovery, up to a budget limit, and in a few cases they traded ownership for the recovery. Most of the older vehicles were simply documented and junked/scrapped. A few ATV's had to be airlifted out due to rough terrain (read, very expensive). A few folks are driving recovered vehicles, legally.

The expedient (but not completely legal) option is to determine legal title/status (or not) and then recover the vehicle (before anyone stops you due to other concerns). Document what you found before you started: the photos, a daily work log or report, and efforts to start the legal process (document the parallel good faith effort).

You may have to release the vehicle to the insurance company or owner, and receive zero compensation (other than a good feeling for cleaning up the potential damage the hulk could cause our sport). Giving up the vehicle is the risk you take by not working through all the proper channels (but it eliminates all the other problems, including owner awareness that could close the area to future recreation).

Good luck.

nope

3 days to get a possibly hydrolocked engine going? how much $$$ are you going to throw at this?

personaly - if i build an off road rig it will be built from the ground up not built from another vehicle...

and i wouldnt want a TJ buggy - everyone and their mom has one...

just my opinion.

3 days tops.

It would not take much $$$ because we do all our own work and parts will be from a junker.

YOu don't understand this is ground up... with a little help.. and less $$$ as you put it

and if your mom has a tj buggy i bet she didn't get it for free from a riverbed.

hey my moms minivan came off the bottom of lake michagan...ermm, what? anyways. talked with the friendly officers today and looks like they are going to take the info i gave them to recover a stolen jeep they've been looking for for 6 months now. they couldnt find it, however and called me back for more details. i'll find out tomorrow if it is still there or if they found it, because as they put it, they'll be pulling me out of class to come help them find it. i guess they got right on it because they called me back like 30 minutes after i talked to srgt nice, who basically reamed me a new one for wheeling back there and told me if he ever caught me on that property he'd bring me in and impound my little jeep. also told me that i busted down a gate and went past posted signs. i dont know what enterence this guy assumed i was clobbering through but the gate and signs dont exist it is just an inviting gravel road that goes back to some sweet trails. so i explained to him what my intentions were for the vehicle and he told me that i would have to take it up with the insurance company once THEY extracted it. they made it clear that i would not be going near it and i was not to go back on that property and that once it gets out im gonna have a fun time dealing with the insurance company..so they say. oh well we'll see what a new day brings..........
