Well it looks like I'll be stationed in england for another year!!

I have recently come across a supplier of mog 404's overhere.

http://www.straightforwardsupplies.co.uk/acatalog/Portal_Axles.html

Was thinking about picking up a set of fully modded ones with the discs and pinion conversion. If my math is right, they come out to around $4900 all done up.

Just wondering if this was a good deal?? I have no idea how much these are going for in the states.

Before anyone asks, they'd prob be put under a scrambler or a YJ/CJ hybrid.

I remember Eric Hanson picking up a set a few years ago but I can't remember how much they cost him. He's stationed back in the US now and I don't have his current contact details. Perhaps someone on base may know him and can reach him.

Are you sure portal axles are what you want? They are great for a buggy but I can imagine that they would restrict the top speed of a road legal vehicle. Are they OK for running over 50mph?

In California you can buy a set for about a grand each, stock. Here is some info from them:

"We currently have large volumes of 404 Unimog Portals in stock in Vallejo, CA. Prices follow:

Re-manufactured Front Complete - Drum to Drum - $1500
Re-manufactured Rear Complete - Drum to Drum - $1100

Front Re-manned Hub Reduction with Shaft and Steering Knuckle $500
Rear Re-manned Hub Reduction with shaft - $350

Used Front Axle Complete - $700 (only 4 more available)

"Re-manufactured" - Under contract to Mercedes Benz, re-manned in Germany by Saar or FWN for the military. Each unit comes in wooden crate with re-mann documentation. Most people make the assumption these axles are new. All axles sold in the wood crate. Open M-F, 9-5.

We stock most 404 portal parts.

I drove a rig on portals with 5.99 I believe, not bad on the freeway. For a Hybrid rig\buggy should not be an issue.

If you are stationed in England, contact in Sweden Renajs ASB in Boras, close by, and look for Volvo portals instead, niceer, lighter, locked, etc cheaper and do not have the freaking long pinion stuff to deal with like mogs.

Hasse is a really cool guy and shoudl be able to hook you up. Heck, you can buy a full Volvo 303 for way less than $4000 :)

I took some crappy pics but here it goes:

Vintagespeed has a set of volvo 303 portals under his mj, maybe he'll post up some pictures. He's got his running a very custom chevy disc brake setup.

really! a volvo 303 for $4000? is that what they go for in europe then youhave to ship them, or you can with some decent luck and searching get one for $4000 in the US already ?

Didn't I read somewhere that the 303 uses a dana 30 center section? What are the good for as far as tire size?? If there a better swap I may have to find a set.

I'm scared to go with 404's under the XJ due to the unibody and the weight of the axles but if the 303's are lighter then I may just go for it.

Thanks for the contact info Gerberhard, I'll have to look him up.

I've seen that, did a nice job but I can't see the unibody standing up to those axles for long. Anyone know the weight of a full size 404? Has to be what twice the weight of a 60?

I am not sure how the axles would be hard on the unibody. The Unibody sits ON the axles. JMO

????? Yes but the unibody still needs to control the axles. lateral and vertical movement of the axles would stress the unibody to some extent. Also with the added leverage the portal boxes give a 900+ pound axle, imagine the force put on the unibody mounts in a rotational direction.

Guess it's no big deal if you don't mind swapping the bodies when yours gets tweaked. That's why I'm saving the portal plans for a YJ framed buggy of some sort.

The diffs are nowhere near 900lbs each. My front is around 600 and the rear is around 570. Since the exocage went on there is very little body flex.

REALLY?? What model of mog axle? The 411 or the 404? Where the hell did I read 900 pounds?? Huh.

404s that are narrowed 7" and have custom disc brakes. Dropping the drums and associated pieces was good for about 85lbs per diff weight reduction. The really big Mogs (U1300s) are probably around 900lbs.
