Mod diary for the streetpirate XJ

I doubt anybody makes and aftermarket crank. One crucial thing I forgot for big numbers is the aluminum head. That, a forged stroker, and a 150 shot would top 400hp at the fly with out too much trouble and with pretty good reliability to boot. Anybody want to pay for parts and I'll find out?? :viking:

Why would you "forget the stroker part", especially since you are talking about a motor rebuild anyways? You think it will rev better or higher with the shorter stroker? If so, not true. Because of 3rd level harmonics, you shouldn't rev a amc I6 past 5600rpm (I believe that's the right rpm). I'm sure Dino will chime in with the exact number if I'm wrong.

I believe the harmonic vibration in the crank begins at about 6200rpm but Hesco advise against revving the 4.0 (or stroker) past 5500rpm 'cause the crank journals tend to crack and the cam apparently produces a harmonic at 5600rpm or so that can break the timing chain. Unfortunately Mopar performance stopped making the timing gear drive that would have cured the latter, but you can at least have the crank nitrided to prevent the former.

dino, you and 5-90 are the coolest guys i know. now if i could only make my poop come out as money. woohoo way to go brent for the hesco hedded motor with the clifford exaust! im going to run a ported ho head on my renix with the clifford header when i can afford the motor.

UPDATE KIND OF:
damn, i spent from noon to almost midnight today doing the rear suspension,
andi have yet to tear in to the passenger side. i added my stock main leaf
with the eyes cut off to a stock jy pack, all poly bushings installed, and the
new bilstein hd shock on the driver side. it brought me up 2.5 in from
whatever degree of sag i had. its a dd, so im driving lopsided tomarrow :)
the 15x10's came in the mail, and im getting bf radial t/a's put on thursday.
the guy at the tire shop said that its the strangest tire/car combo he has
ever heard of. so of course i thanked him :)

Guys (DR. Dyno, StreetPirate, Cjmartz2k, brent)
  1. Seems like the area where the existing battery was, is so tight to be "REPLACE" with my existing PAXTON SN-2000 S/C
  2. Also, the exisiting top mounting (on the chasis and frame within the engine bay) for shocks and coils will be cut open, so that I can installed Walker Evans Dual Rate Coil-Over shocks.
  3. That means, I would fabricate top mounting for COil-Over shocks close to the existing mounting, BUT, within the engine bay. It would be a tight fit, if not impossibl to install the S/C.
Questions :
  • Since I already have the PAXTON SN-2000 S/C, should I work all the way thru and make it possible, or should I just forget about installing the S/C and go back to square one and purchase performance parts for the already 4.5L engine (Camshaft, TB, Intake, Headers, etc)

I haven't seen a Paxton, but wouldn't it be possible to use a hood scoop or at least cut a hole in the hood to allow for fitment of the S/C? If you can find a way to make it work, I doubt you'd regret it... ;)

I don't know about any others, but I for one would like to see some pics of your XJ once its running...

So this is going to be a lifted streedrod? I've never heard of that combo either, but it sure sounds interesting... I better read your buildup diary a little more closely! :D

Hey thanks, yes, slightly lifted in the rear, give it a little east coast hot rod rake.
at heart im a muscle car guy, but ive fallen in love with my xj. it also has to be high enough to run my winter tires without rubbing. (30x9.5 and they did rub a little)

drove it today with just the driver side rear done, huge difference. the front
bilsteins showed up in the mail today, doing the passenger side rear tonight, tires tomarrow, and poly bushings and shocks in the front sunday morning.

the rear sway end links are SUPER mushy rubber, do they make poly for those or just the frame mounts?

I wouldn't say its a street rod, but I'm shooting for the "did I just get spanked by a big tire beat up pile of S*@!"

I'd throw the supercharger in and figure out the shocks later, its all possible, may not be easy to work on afterwards though.

The problem with the crank is the material..its nodular iron..yes you can get a custom crank..any of the major racing crankshaft manufacturers can build one..just show up with a wheelbarrow full of 50's..you want rods made of unobtainium?? yup...those too...it only costs mega money...want splayed 4 bolt main caps...etc, etc.

I knew a guy in the 70's with mega bux that built a E Altered using a 292 chevy I-6...injected nitro...that thing ran like stink, but killed many thousands of dollars worth of parts including a few cylinder heads that were made by resectioning SB v-8 heads before he gave up on it.

My pick of the litter for sow's ear to silk purse is when Cosworth built a 1600cc race motor based on the Ford "Kent" engine (We may know it as the base engine used in the old Ford Pinto) A 4 valve pent roof dohc little monster that slayed many larger engines.

If you have the funding and think outside the box, a lot of "impossible" things can be done. Is it worth it?? most likely not in any real sense.

Thanks for the "SUPPORT", I'll try one more time to try to FIT the S/C.

wished i have one of those "AVENGER... S/C"

Now I recognize it, I saw one before on a website somewhere and thought, "weird, that's a belt-driven turbo!" :D

I say go for it, it would be awesome to have that thing sticking 10cm out of the hood...

Keep us posted please! :D

what did i tell ya, theyd stick out about 4"

looks like a mexican low rider

I agree. if you could find some way to do it using rims with less back spacing then it might look good. for now it really does look like a mexican low rider. its a cool concept tho
