i will try to keep it simple, ihave 1990xj with 231 trans case and front carrier with vac shift. i have aquired an 87 wth dana 44 242 case and non shifting front carrier, can i run that carrie with the 231? or do i need to install the 242 to coo with it, thanks for any input.

Yes, you can use the non-disconnect Dana 30 with your current 231

I can second what Dutch said. The non-disconnect D30 will work with the 231 t-case just fine with no modifications other than ridding your rig of the vacuum disconnect hoses and capping off the one vacuum source that supplied it to the lines.
