All the used ones I've seen around are already getting old and rusty, and I'm not ready to start on another beater.

Anyone in the same boat have some wisdom on what might be a good replacement? Seats are critical. My wife and I both love the XJ seats and suffer in nearly anything else.

What is rust? Come down here and buy another XJ. I picked up a '98 last year with 63k miles. Vehicles don't rust down here.
