Massachusetts Lift Probs. with the Police?

Has anyone had major issues with the Massachusetts police with lift laws? I'm trying to get a feel for how high i can go without catching major negative attention from the police. Thanks in advance for any input, you guys are always great.

well, besides the fact that mass police are not noted for their asthetic taste in motor vehicles I would start with the motor vehicle laws and go from there... Then carry a copy of them with you at all times :D

the first, and most common measurment is from the ground to the bottom of the door.. 29" MAX..... this basically gives you a total of 4 to 4.5" TOTAL LIFT.. that includes the tires... there is an alternative mathematical equation that relates to increased track width to offset the increased height.. so if you go wider you can go a lil taller but thats a battle that would take a lawyer in court would be my guess... my 87 with an RE 4.5 kit and 33x12.50s measures at 31" to the bottom of the door.. so i figure a set of 235s on inspection day would get me to 29"..... there is also a max rear bumper height but it escapes me... if you are over the limit and you act stupid expect problems from the boys in blue.. keep it slow and dont draw atention and they wont give you alot more trouble than any other motorist..

thanks guys, i guess i'm going to go with the RE 4.5 afterall...

here's the actual law link I've done the math as best I could and like Mike said for an XJ it comes out to about 4.5" including the extra inch ocer the limit that you are allowed to go. I think you would have more problems with the annual inspection than you would with the local PD, especially since you have a late model XJ that's pretty clean. Unless you are "known" to the local PD in which case they'll make your lide hell over any little thing they can. :wierd:

Keep in mind that according to most RE customers, their lifts typically net one to two inches more than the advertised height. The 4.5" lift may give you close to 6". Before buying, check with some actual users to see what they bought and how much lift it actually provided.

i have the re 5.5 xd with 33's and so far no problems i have been pulled over but not for any thing to do with my truck just the driver

i did my RE 4.5" super-flex kit in april.. (3.5" leafs and 1.5" shackle, and a 3/4" coil spacer)) initial lift was measured out at 6.5" rear and 6' front.. it has settled to about 5" front and 5.5" rear.... the 33s i run required front fender cutting but i have only minimal contact in the rear but will be cutting them back soon as well... i suggest a spacer over the front coils to even it out a bit.. still "ass-high" but only a little, but i load it down alot when i wheel so it levels out...

well i finally got my new lift (6in) and will be running 35's, so once i get em on we shall see how bad i (or my girlfriend) get harrassed by the cops and the inspection stations. :dunce:

I have 8.5-9 inches with 35s, I have only been given 1 ticket for bumper hieght but the only reason why I got that is because to cop disregarded the 85mph in a 55mph zone... I will gladly take the lift ticket instead of the speeding... They can only tack on more tickets if they have you pulled over for speeding or a misdemeaner... I have to change my tires (smaller ) when I go and get my vehical inspected in August

xtrmxj: 6" lift on your mj, and its ur tow rig? what do you tow... this is the other side of my problem... my XJ is my tow vehicle for a 4,200 lb, 24 ft. travel trailer. do you pull something close to that size and weight?

On my MJ I have a 9" rear end full width that I made into a duelly, it also has 4.56 gears... Currently the Mj is at my perents house in IN., My dad uses it on the farm to pull equipment... Before I took it back to my Perents I would use it to tow my XJ on a Trailer cross country..

Looks like I need to change the gears on my signature for the MJ
