So my new 1991 Cherokee has a maint reqd light showing on the dash any clue what this may be?? Ive been fixing it up and changing fluids out but it still is on. Any thoughts????

Is it the emissions maintenance required light? Are you over 100,000 miles? When was your last emissions check?

I would look into it and see for sure why the light it on. I had the emissions maintenance light come on in my 88 and I was told to just pull the bulb, it was set off by a timer.

mileage?
O2 sensor?
some chrysler products kick maintenance light after certain mileage to replace the O2....need scanner to turn off....

If its like the one on my 90 (and Troy helped me figure this out) there is a timer underneath the dash on the driver's side. Its attached to the knee kicker panel (the lowest peice that runs along the entire length of the dash and smacks your knees allt hetime). What happens is that timer sets off the light and then when you take it into the dealership they replace the O2 sensors, and other emmissions items. They also replace the timer as there is no way to reset it. I just unplugged the timer on mine and no more light.

'91 is different from '90.

my obd 2 programmer thing just told me i had high voltage to my rear o2 sensor, i reset it and the code just came back, looks like i'll be replacing my sensor sometime... eventually

yea i know he doesnt he just has the obd1, he can still get one and have it for future check engine lights... i was stating my problem anyhow, thanks though.

Auto Zone will check the code and tell you what's wrong and clear the codes for free. I've got 160K on my O2 senser and it's still ok. They usually go bad if you don't keep the engine maintenance up (tuned) or you run bad fuel (leaded) in it.

Pg. 18, 91 Jeep Cherokee Owner's Handbook.
"Emission Maintenance Indicator Light-Illuminates at approximately 82,500 miles to indicate that the oxygen sensor needs replacement."

And I'll bet there is a timer under the dash on the driver's side, just like my 90. While the 91's were the start of the HO engine, they didn't change everything all at once. Look and see if there is a clear plastic box with gears visible that has a two lead electrical plug.

NO,No, no Freakin' No!!!
It's not a CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, it's the Maintenance Required Light. It will not show up when you plug an OBD1 Scan tool into the rig. Been there, Done that, Got the Tee-Shirt, Hat, and matching tie.
