Help needed in the UK. According to uk info all cherokee's pre 96 had the trac-loc lsd fitted, if this is tru then mine is shot as there is no friction between wheels, is this easy to repair or is it a dealer repair only. Please advise. Cheers.

i'm pretty sure the have rebuild kits for them but where to get them i don't know. somebody here should know

Unless it's different over there LSD is and always has been an option, about $200 USD as I remember. Yes, they make rebuild kits for them with new clutches and springs, however before I got myself in an uproar I'd pop the diff cover and take a look see if you really have it. One giveaway you do is a small metal tag on the diff that says limited slip diff. If not and you want one there are much better options out there like Auburn, Detroit, powertrax just to name a few.

I also completely agree with Rich's perspective. One quickie way to determine whether or not you have a (functioning) LSD is to jack up the rear wheels under the diff. Rotate one wheel, if you have a working LSD, the opposite wheel will rotate in the same direction. Otherwise, it rotates in the opposite direction.

As it is, when I changed my D35 w/TracLoc to a D44, I put in an Auburn. A WORLD of difference. W/o getting into a discussion of lockers vs. LSD, if you want to stay with an LSD, this is an excellent choice.

Good luck,

Look for a sticker on the inside of the glove box door. If it came with an LSD from the factory there should be a warning sticker there. The clutch packs run about $60 USD from the cataloges, try 4wd.com or quadratec.com.

Ok so far, no sticker in glovebox other than tyre (tire) pressures. Did jack test last Sunday but whilst changing wheel, left one wheel on ground and expected to feel resistance on free wheel with transmission in neutral and hand brake off, maybe thats not the rite way huh. Will try your way next weekend.

Note that mike said 'functioning', if the clutch packs are shot it will act like an open diff using the spin the wheel test. The ONLY way to tell for sure is to remove the cover and use the mark 1 mod 0 eyeball... once you have your eyeball on it there is no 'well, maybe', possible, etc. It's either there or not, only then can you make an informed decision.
I have an auburn pro in my 98XJ, been in there for about 3 years now. That said I'll be putting a full locker in my TJ come spring.
