Lost Coast Run Sept 25 - 27

sorry guys but i gotta back out at the last minute. They gave me the opportunity to be on the crew flying out to the redding airshow and i had to jump on it. 3 days all expenses paid trip out to redding to be in an airshow was too good of an opportunity to pass up.

Sean/Trevor if you guys are interested i would defenitely like to run this trail again. If nothing else i will have to catch up with you and get directions.

Mike

Since it appears everyone wants to do a day trip I will back out. I will try to participate in the high lakes clean-up this weekend.

I hope everyone has fun and I look forward to the next trip.

Im still in. Might get a girl from hsu to come with me. Sweet.

And.... FINALLY A SUPPORTER!!!

Red name... ftw.

Looks like a small group of us from the Eureka area are going to meet up at the Park n Ride at Herrick and Hwy 101 around 7:20 am, just outside of Eureka. From there, we are going to caravan down to Garberville and meet at Rays Food place to catch up with anyone else that may be coming from Sacramento / Bay area. After a meet and greet, we'll head off to the trail.

Anyone else from the Sacramento / Bay area doing the run on Saturday?

Trip was fun. We ran into a little delay when we had to remove some purposely fallen trees across the road on the Whitethorn side. For future knowledge vehicle access is now prohibited on the beach as its in the Sinkyone Wilderness State Park which is/has developed its final General Plan and EIR. Comment period was in 2006 and it looks like the environmental folks won out again on this one. There is only one sign posted stating the no driving on the beach on the Hwy 1 side of the road and none on the Whitethorn side. Since we came from the Whitethorn side I was unaware of this change in access to the beach. Anyway enjoy some pics from today.

We went too. Got to Four Corners at about noon. A guy with a pitch fork there said Usal Road was closed due to fallen trees. We went north to Shelter Cove via Chemise Mountain Road. Headed on the trails north to Mathole Road through Humboldt State Park, Awesome time, sorry I missed the group. The kid finally got his jeep dirty.

Now I got to make the Usal Beach Road run.

The run was a lot of fun, and it was great getting to meet the local folks!

I suspect the fallen trees we came across were purposely felled by some local "growers". It's getting close to harvest season here and they probably want as little traffic on the trail as possible.

Anyway, with the help of Trevor's winch, we were able to clear the road enough to get the jeeps past. The funny thing was just as we cleared the road, a Rav4 came upon us from behind. They guy was a foreigner (German or Austrian) as he spoke no English. We made sure he made it past the trees, then went on. The trail got ruttier and a bit more muddy in sections once we got past the trees. It was no problems for the Jeeps...I'm not sure how well the Rav4 faired though. I never did see the guy emerge from the trail anytime after that. Hope he made it out.....

We didn't run into him as we went back the other way, so I am sure he turned back. Not sure how a stock RAV4 could have made it through there. Great pics guys! It was great meeting up with you... wish we had been just a bit quicker getting up there. We missed the scheduled Garberville meeting by about 30 minutes and decided to go in from the other side. We had a great day though... I'll get some of our pics posted up in the next couple of days.

Yeah... I live about 2 blocks from Dutton... Where are you parked? I think I remember the wave but not what your truck looked like.

It looks like this;

Depending on the temperature, it might have had two or four off, but I only take all four off if it’s really hot. I was parked about a block away from the elementary school by the house that always has yard sales in the summer.

But anyways look at how depressingly bleak Carnegie looks compared to usal beach, and it doesn’t help that some of the hills at Carnegie burned.
