Long story short the engine in my cherokee needs a rebuild. Plans are to build a stroker using the current engine but i hadn't planned on it this soon so i'm looking for a 4.0 to swap in while i research and gather parts for the stroker.

I haven't had much luck with the classifieds or craigslist, so for those that have been to klode auctions what i'm wonderin is if its realistic to buy a newer cherokee there for under a $800 or so.

I'd like to find something wrecked in the rear with a decent motor that i could pull and then part out/scrap the rest.

Any input from those that have been? Any tips or anything to watch out for if i go?

TIA

i buy a lot of cars at klodes, so heres my take:lecture:

it depends on how new, a 97+ would prob run a little more than that, unless it was wrecked pretty good. also depends on the miles, if your wanting anything under 100k then again prob a little more. you may win the bid somewhere around 1000+, but you also will have other costs, klode charges a few hundred in buyers fees (it depends on how much your bid is, i think ~1k is around 200-300) plus if youve never bought at klode your gonna have $150 fee to register. more bad news is that in the summer time the prices rise, significantly. the dead of winter on the snowiest day possible is the best time to find deals. if you do it over the summer, plan on lots of long days waiting for cars that go for way too much money.

last year when i needed an engine i bought one (the whole car that is) for 1100 (won the bid at that price, i think it was around 1300-1400 before i was done). it was an 01 with ~73k. that took me several weeks of looking, driving down there and watching things go for way too much. but even at that price i was able to part out the rest to break even...meaning i got the engine and other stuff off of it that i wanted for free:party: (minus time)

all that being said, its definitly a way to go especially if you have lots of time to strip the jeep down after you take the engine out and sell parts, but your probably not goign to find anything out the door for $800

junkyards will sell you an engine for around $500

Yep, thejeepgod speaks the truth. Our friends from south of the border are keeping the prices up - if it runs and drives, they generally bid to win. Hard wrecks aren't going for as cheap as they used to because steel is paying better again - scrap cars are around $250 a ton now, up from about $105 a ton a month ago.

I've got a '92 H.O. with 111K miles on it...... PM sent.

I had thought about going the junk yard route but if i was gonna spend the time to pull it at a yard (or pay at a yard that pulled it for me) i thought i might as well pay a little more at auction and maybe recoup some of the money by parting it out.

I knew about the registration fee but i didn't realize they also took buyers fees and such. Maybe for future projects i'll look into it further but right now i'm not sure its worth it.

Yellaheep made me an offer that i think i'm going to take him up on.

Thanks anyways for the help guys

Yella you have a PM.
