I have looked as some pictures of ashmanjeepxj's rig, the only thing that looks wide is the front, albiet that he runs a 60 front and a 70 rear. I think the rear may not be that much of an issue, would it be worth cutting down the front 44? I think I will measure tomorrow and see just how much wider this will be!
I would not really go through the trouble of cutting it down. If you leave the axles as they are and run a 5+" backspacing wheel it will give you a nice stance. I have the exact same front axle, but out of a 79 F250, and plan on keeping it the factory width, getting a set of custom alloy shafts made (not all that much more expensive then standard alloys) and fitting the shafts with CTM joints (if I have the money) and refreshing the factory shafts and run those as a spare. I plan on running the same rear axle as that as well, I just have to track one down under $200.
Another item to keep in mind is wheel size, you'll need to run at least a 16" wheel to fit over those calipers. I plan on running a 17" wheel. I am assuming you already know all of this though. Dont let anyone talk you out of running those dual piston calipers either, they are nice. You also might want to swap on a new MasterCylinder / brakebooster to take full advantage of the new braking hardware. Another good thing about the rear axle, it is really cheap and easy to go to rear discs. Search on ebay for the brackets, pick up a set of calipers and rotors, do some plumbing and your ready to roll.
