Anyone run a welded rear locker with a 5 speed?

I'm not worried about the strength D44, but more about the dialy driving. This would not be a permanent upgrade, but long enough for me to save for a detroit or an ARB.

Right know I run a D35 with a Lock-Right, it works well, but it has it's draw backs. I know with a welded spiders I'll get increased tire wear.

If I had to go back to a Lock-Rite in the D44, could I still use the carrier or is it toast?

I used to run a spooled Nine-Inch in the rear of a 4-cyl wrangler for a long time. It ran great, actualy tracked better than open. If you get it welded by very careful to get it right otherwise it can come apart and destroy the gearing. I would suggest a full spool which you can get for about $130 or used at Ebay, it would be alot safer and stronger. I run a spool in the back of mine and a detroit in the front, great combo and I will never go back to anything else, and yes it is a daily driver too. Hope this helps.

As long as you apply alot of power when you turn then it is OK. Cornering, well all I can say about that is you have to give up handling for traction, but I still had no major problem there, even in the rain. The most fun is when you try to park and the squealing of the tires attracts everyones attention. :)

I love my lincoln locker. so much so I spooled the 9" that is going in next. Still don't know what to do for the RC44 front.

Bluexj89,

I have been through many lockers, best out there is the Detroit for the front. I have tried The ARB's and I just don't trust them anymore, especialy when I have hubs. I'd rather have it there always. You pay for what you get.

How is steering on tight twisty stuff where the locker really isn't needed? I am afraid of running with one hub unlocked Personally I'd rather have the Detroit in the front but I might have to run open till the funds are available. Or a lock right.

New broke my welded 35 with 33's on it. Or the rear of my K-5 that had 35's. Or any of the 3 beater chevys I raced at the circle track.
But I live in Florida and challenging trails are hard to find unless you like mud and water( Everythings good in moderation). I'd loan you my old 35 if you wanted to try welded gears. My local exhaust shop/ group of race nuts welded my 35 for $40. You get used to driving it and it always reacts the same way. No surprises. The only click or bang you would ever hear is the last noise the rear would ever make. Cept youd have to come to florida to get it.

I ran a spooled 44 in my 5-speed MJ with 4.56 and 33" MTs for approx 20k road & trail. A spool or welded rear will chew up your tires some on the road or on high-traction rocks...but for $225 it's a trade-off vs twice that for a locker.

I loved it so much, that I swapped it into my XJ today. going from a year with 33"/3.55 to 4.56 is more fun than foreplay... Getting to bark both tires on the road with a goose of the fun pedal is a bonus... not worrying about one-wheel-wonder syndrome on the trail is what it's all about.

Lotsa folks swear by their lockers, but for half the money (or alot less if welded) I can absorb some tire wear.

I never ran a lincoln locker and I don't think I ever will. I just don't trust it on a DD. If it was a trail only rig then I probably would just to save $$, or I would get a spool. But for a DD I would get a lockright if you are tight for cash. I have one in my D44 and although I haven't been that hard on it, it has not failed me.

First, the tire wear is more like cupping than anything, so it turns the tires loud, I ran BFG MT and they lasted for about 30,000 miles, swampers and anything softer would wear down quicker. As for steering the bigger the tire the easier it unlocks around corners. I have had no problem with the detroit, I would never go with a spool up front though.
