Lightning Rod on Red Cone

Yesterday I decided to take my son out wheeling and did a solo run up Red Cone. By the time we got to the top we were surrounded by clouds and it was snowing a bit. I was already concerned about lightning, what with being a huge hunk of metal at the highest point for miles in the middle of a stormy looking cloud. I got out to take a few quick pictures and noticed the sign at the top was buzzing/crackling like a power line. That scared the shite out of me and I got out of there as fast as I could, to heck with the pictures. All I got was a blurry one of the sign.

This isn't a decent you want to hurry down, especially when it's snowy and muddy. After sliding a bit (sometimes starting to go sideways) I almost needed a new pair of shorts by time I got to the bottom.

About 5 minutes after getting down the three hills the lightning and thunder started. None of it sounded close enough to be hitting the top of Red Cone, but I'm still dang glad I wasn't sitting up there.

Here are a few more pics:

Looking back the way I came. I didn't notice the rainbow when I took the picture.

Right before the second descent (sorry for the blurriness)

Shelf road on the way down. I ran into a TJ coming up and had to reverse up a quarter mile of this stuff. No fun!

Getting a little help with airing down. :)

Just looking at the picture makes me pucker...maybe next year.

Love the pics Jawa! I can't believe the wife said; "Ya take the boy and drive to run Red Cone solo for the afternoon." :greensmok

It is so funny that you started to see snow and less than a 100 miles north it was just raining, but still 60+ degrees out?

I always thought Red Cone was one way? Maybe they should make it that way............:callme: "who is in charge of this?" :looney:

I'm not surprised at all that she told me to take the boy and give her a break for the day, but I AM a bit surprised she was cool with me taking him wheeling solo. I made the mistake of telling her "if you don't hear from me by 5:00, you can start worrying". I didn't get back into cell coverage until 7:00. Needless to say she was a bit freaked out by time I called.

I was thinking the same thing. With that long a section of VERY narrow shelf road, with no spots to pass, it ought to be one way. At that point you're off Red Cone and on Webster Pass though, so you kinda have to go that way if you're running Webster into Montezuma...
