Launching Techniques

What do you guys do as far as launching techniques if you guys race. I know, i know, jeeps arent made to do it, but it's still fun. I have a 1998 xj 4 speed auto and the inline 6. Stock height and 235/75's for tires. I generally keep it in 2wd, and hold the brake a little bit and then gas it to about 1700rpm while staying put. Then when the light goes green id let off brake and floor gas with no wheelspin. usuaully over 2000rpm on "brakestand" i start spinning but this seems to work. Im not sure if theres a better way under dry conditions or what. Any thoughts cause im prolly headin to track soon.??

put it in 4wd hold the brakes hard floor it let off the brake when you want to go.

Actually...flashing the converter launches harder than stalling it. Stalling (powerbraking) is used to control wheelspin. If you don't have a wheelspin or hop issue, then you should just sit with your left foot on the brake. Jab the gas and release the brake at the same time the light turns green...or about a half a tick sooner :D If you are spinning the tires, try 4x4 and shift it out about 10 mph.

I have a bone stock 4.0L with a 5 Speed trans and a bone stock 4 speed slushbox. I don't want to trash my clutch so, just let it out and before the trans winds up, i nail it and it should all be a seamless launch. Just, let the clutch out and when u feel it about to lunge forward nail it. The auto is even easer, a tiny bit of brake to gte the torque up and let her rip. PS, 4.0L's pull hard above 3 grand so let it get some traction and then she'll fly.

I've actually noticed that my stock 4.0 seems to pull the most above 4000. I don't remember it really pulling much before then, which is a shame, 'cause once you get to 4000, you've only got less than a grand left. :(

ive got a 89 4.0 5spd with 32's i hold the engine at 2000rpm and dump the clutch and i get just a tiny squeal from the tires and it launches well - anything below 2k and it bogs and anything above i get wheelspin and a slower launch. i had a 94 4.0 auto. and i would stand on the brake and rev to 2k then let off the brake and floor it (a bit more wheel spin than my 89 but it had stock tires so like u said 1700 seems about right) ive tried some 4hi launches in the auto(it had a np242 so i could put it in full time 4hi) and it helped with wheelspin but it felt alot more harsh so i quit

if i were you id keep it out of 4 wheel it just doesn't launch right. keep it in 2 and left foot on brake and right foot on gas. get it up to the highest rpm before it squeels and dump it on green.
