KRONIKs motor swap in modified xj- quick tip!

let me start by saying that i didn't put this in OEM because i have a highly modified xj. (far from stock)
this is a quick tip for making the engine swap easier in a modified xj

do you have a LA/ skid equipped xj? i have a secret for you!
my xj has a custom L.A. kit, skids, tera lo..... way too much crap to take off just to change the motor.

i wanted to figure out a way that i would not have to remove all of my skids and cross member to drop the trans, or have to pull the engine and trans together.
also i am 6'5" tall and my hands are huge. its not easy for me to get between the floorboard and trans to get to the top 2 torx bolts....

well. i found a way to skip the whole process of dropping everything.
i decided i was going to drill 2 holes in each side of the floor board. (pics coming soon)

by doing this i was able to reach the 2 torx bolts much easier!
i made one larger hole first to see what or where i needed the smaller hole to be.
it was a pain getting the holes started.
here is a picture to help you understand.
drivers side.
first hole to see through/ hold bolt when removing

second hole was a 1in hole. just enough to get the extension and torx socket through.

did the same on the passenger side

what this allows you to do is get a better angle on the bolt head and that means less chance of rounding off the bolt head. i had it drilled and both top torx bolts out in 20 min.
awesome time saver.

tada-:guitar: motor out by itself and i didnt have to drop any skids, cross member, etc.
i just took the 2 motor mount bolts out and dropped it onto the mounts before drilling.
the ONLY thing that went wrong is when i was drilling the big hole on the pass. side. the bottom side of the bit hit the trans dip stick tube... no big deal really.
i needed a new trans pan anyway.

i am going to spray paint the holes(to stop any rust) and plug them with some rubber plugs, then lay the carpet back over, you will never know there are holes in the floor board.

i may have left something out.
if you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Good job Cody!

I have to admit, when you first asked about getting room to work in that area, I was thinking you were built like Flores. :D

thanks.
i may have some crazy ideas, but im NOT crazy.
sometimes i get an idea that i think will make things easier.
sometimes they work, sometimes they dont. but this was one of the GOOD ideas! lol
if i were to build like flores i would have posted how to drill a hole in advanced fab. haha
but im not flores....
maybe thats why some people like my ideas! lol

LMAO!

I didn't say think like Flores.

I didn't say act like Flores.

I said "built" like Flores.

I'm a little on the tall side, so I get what you mean about getting your hands in tight spots. I'm also old and crafty, I'll look for a way to make the tools work for me.

Considering your solution, I think you are well on your way to old and crafty. :)
