Boy Matt, that thing used to be really pretty when it was stock. ;)

Looks good!

I remember the first Timber Tamers meeting I went to, and Matt's Jeep still had the "Briarwood" look to it, albeit a tall one. Now, well, your rig has come a looong way's. Very cool actually to have seen it get to this point.
Looks awsome Matt!!

Thanks Chris

Well - at least I got a cage in/on it before I rolled it...

I will try and dig up the only pic I have of it when I first bought it....

Believe it or not I am a true redneck and this guy did everyting in the pictures:

The willys is going well - I need to mount the rear most t-case and then the propane tanks, so I can get to the coil over hoops and the rad supports up front - then pull it all apart to rebuild the motor and paint...

The crawler box still has some issues but I hope to fix them next quarter in my machining class....

Hello Matt, I have a bender just like that and even tried to sell it today so that I could raise some cash to maybe buy a proper bender. Although, after looking at your rig, I am totally impressed. What secrets can you share about this type of bender and using DOM tube. Everything I have read says I can't use my bender but I have now seen 2 item (your cage and a friend's bumper) that was built using just that. Did you add a sheet of metal to the dies? Thanks for any help you can offer and rock on. :guitar:

Yea - it really depends on your dies and the thickness of the material - I think .120 wall is the thinest you can use - try some shimming to make it tight and then cut a 3" long section of what ever you are using and chop it lengthwise - put the two "C" shaped pieces under the rollers so you don't dimple the tube... it just takes some practice as every die set for these cheap benders are different - (you can also weld in shims once you get pleasant results) Happy pumping

Not to make this thread about the bender but I was under the impression that there was some structural difference in the bent steel from a "pipe" bender vs. a "tubing" bender. SPOBI?

As long as you can prevent the tube from kinking or crushing the bends should be very similar - there may be a little difference in the outside wall thickness of a jack-bent and pro-tools/JD bent section but I don't think it would be much (a few thou if anything)

There was some discussion on the POR board a while back where H8monday used cast elbows in TIG'ed cage as he was unhappy with the elongation and thinning of the tube when bent over 30 to 40 degrees...

I have cut some of the material I use after making bends to the limit of that bender and still had what I was confortable calling aceptable wall thickness

0.134 wall was still over 0.125 thick after being bent to just past 90 degrees

I think it just comes down to what you are comfortable with and how the structure is built - I see alot more cage failure due to lack of triangulation or non-functional nodes than from material or weld/HAZ failures...
