ipod and MP3 to AAC question

I am having problems getting my MP3 discs of music I dl'ed back in the day from Kazaa, etc onto my ipod. The songs show up in I tunes (Win XP), but when I click on them I get an error message saying that the original file can't be found and the music may be write protected. Is there a way to fix this?

Did you get the mp3s from CDs or did you buy them from a site? MP3s bought on sites like Wal-Mart, etc will not sync to your iPOD. You'll get that message.

Another option is that when you burned them to your hard drive you used Media Player. Possibly encrypting them to only work on your pc or devices you sync with Media Player.

When you burned them to the disc what program did you use? It's possible that you may have accedently protected them when you copied, which sucks. I'm trying to see if I have a program that will help...

I found a program that seems to work. It's called dBpowerAMP. I got it from download.com. It converts the files from MP3s to WAV files which seem to transfer to iTunes ok. I still have to try syncing though.

The WAV file are going to take a lot of space up on your iPOD, maybe 3x the size of a normal MP3 would. If I were you I would star burning CDs again using iTunes. Make sure your settings call for MP3s.

could be that service pack 2 for xp has alot of copyright agreements with labels and is prohibiting transfer...it happens infreq. but might be something to consider.

You may also want to reconsider letting Itunes manage your music. I have been very anti-itunes since day one. It seems to be pretty close to what RealMedia started doing in the mid 90's when they would take over your damn computer when you installed their software.

Needless to say you CAN use other software that is more efficient to load music onto your ipod. My personal favorite is called ephpod. It is a freeware program that is very widely used among ipod enthusiasts and is available on Linux as well for you anti-microsoft people. Its super light weight and works well. It also has some other features that Itunes does not have.
