Inboard/outboard boat motor cooling question

Hey everyone. Just wanted to see if anyone had experience with or could answer some questions about inboard/outboard boat motor cooling. I have an '86 Sunbird runabout with a 2.5L GM (OMC) motor. Saturday, I noticed while idling to set the ski rope out the temp shot up to 210 deg. Usually it runs 160 all day long. Once i got up to speed the temp slowly went down to 165 and remained till idle again. Does this water pump have a tattler? Any ideas t stat, water pump? Ordering service manual monday. blaise :us:

Sounds like the thermostat, but how long has it been since you change the pickup pump in the outdrive?

Is it cooled by the water the boat is in? Or does it have a heat exchanger and coolant in the engine?

When was the impeller last changed? Should do that every year. If it has a heat exchanger, when was it last rodded out to clear debris?

Like Lincoln said, could be the thermostat... but you also need to check that impeller. When the sit for a while, the rubber vanes get a "set" to them and do not work as well. Last thing you need is for it to go out on you when you are wanting to enjoy the boat. :)

The motor is cooled by the water the boat is in (picked up by the outdrive near the skeg) and to my knowlege the impeller has never been changed. Guess i'll just plan on doing both before the next outing. Thanks for the help blaise

Good plan. That impeller is probably not in great shape.
