Guy is having a garage sale and he's got a set of 4.56 dana 30 gears, the only problem is he doesn't know if they are reverse cut or standard. How can i tell whether to put them in my cj or in my xj? any cues on identifying which way a reverse cut goes would be helpful since i have never bought a set before.
Well first off, there are two different types of low pinion dana 30's Those would be TJ low pinion gears and low pinion gears from a XJ and YJ. So you are really distinguishing between 3 sets of gears. However, a HP is a HP gear set.
The only way I know to tell would be to look at your diff cover.
example diff cover
You can see the buldge is on the left side (looking from the front) meaning ring gear will be pointing to the right, and the pinion is located on the right of the buldge. Now the difference. HP gears will have a concave AT the pinion pointing downwards (kinda making a valley for a pool to form in...a U shape).
That's about it...place the pinion on the ring gear, and look at it in the orientation it would be sitting in the axle.
Correction, the only LP XJ was the 2000-2001 and they use the "short" pinion TJ set.The other LP gears are YJ.Also set the ring down on a table(teeth up),imagine rotating the gear clock wise, the HP set would sling the oil from the center out,the LP set would be moving/scooping the oil to the center.

I'll add to it. CJ's had had a low pinion 30 with a long pinion shaft. This gearset carried over into ZJ's but not sure how long...
also some early CJ's had a LP D30 in the rear.
ALL YJ's and all XJ's up until 2000ish had HP D30's.
TJ's and the mentioned late xj's have the LP D30 with the short pinion.
a LP gearset would spiral clockwise
with the ring gear flat on the table, the teeth closest to you would go this way ///
a HP gearset has a CC spiral and the teeth closest to you on a table would go this way \\\
