i have an automatic 97 cherokee and i just recently bored out the throttle body. when i was done i drove it and the rpms were extremly high when idleing and it took a while to shift. I figured it was because the IAC was dirty so i took it out and cleaned it. the idle when in nutral dropped but it still took a while to shift. then im driving and the check engine light comes on and it had a really hard time accelerating. the rpms would rise but it would accelerated really slowly. im going to try and clean the IAC more thuroughly tomorrow but other than that i dont kno what it could be. any ideas? id greatly appreciate it.

I was going to ask about the kick down cable as well... but if you have a light on, I would say take it to auto zone or something so you can run the codes and that should tell you something...

i just double checked the cable and it is connected. Would it have to be readjusted after being disconnected?

ill take it to my friends house so that he can run the codes for me because i am completely broke haha. Thanks for the replys

hey you have a 97, you can do your own codes (well kinda)

get in, sit down, insert key, then...

key on, key off, key on key off, key on key off, key on leave it and let the CEL light come on. it will flash, count the flashes thats your first number, there will be a pause, and count the second group of flashes, thats your second number. check back in here and we can give you an idea of what the problem is.
if you have a digital Odometer it will show you the codes, and it will always end with code 55 (end of codes)

example
24 = - - (pause) - - - -
55 = - - - - - (pause) - - - - -

other than that, have a look at your butterfly valve, if you bored out some of the area around it, you could possibly throw off the sensors, not sure if it would cause this sorta problem, but it wouldn't be good thing either way.

i got 12, 45, then 55. I tried looking it up and i found out that 12 means the battery was disconnected during the last 50 key starts, which is true, so i guess just leaving the battery connected should solve that? I could not find out what 45 means, i just double checked to make sure it was in fact 45 and it was. Does anyone know what it stands for and how to fix it?

thanks for the help guys i really appreciate it

I replaced both the TPS and the IAC sensors and it seemed to have fixed both the high idle and late shifing. Thanks for all the help guys it means alot
