I swear the problems never stop

I got the starter off and everything seemed to be fine no teeth damage or anything and now i put to the starter back in and its not making any noise at all no clicking or anything what now....

And you used two bolts? With lock washers? And you had it tested?

Ok, so it isn't working at all, correct?

Check power/ground, test starter relay. It really sounds like it should get tested. Your local auto parts store can do that for you, usually no charge.

cant i just bring the starter into my local auto store and have it tested that way..... but i am hoping it something simple cause like i said its not making any noise now....

Yes, just take the starter in. They can bench test it.

No.

You have a positive lead to the starter from the battery, starter grounds through its case.

The starter relay, mounted to the inner fender well near the battery has a positive lead from the battery too. There are also three other connectors on the starter relay. One is marked IGN, that is where the signal comes from when key is turned to start position. One is marked SOL, that runs to the starter solenoid and is what causes the starter spin and the clutch to engage so the gears mesh and the engine (hopefully) cranks over. The last connector is marked G for ground.

If you have your primary battery cable connected to the starter, starter is grounded through its case. When trying to start the engine with the key, a signal comes in on IGN and if the starter relay is correctly funtioning a signal will go from SOL to the starter's solenoid, the solenoid is excited, starter spins, clutch forces gear into engagement with flexplate's teeth.

You can jump a positive lead from the battery, or from the primary positive cable, to the solenoid on the starter. That would be bypassing the starter relay to see if the starter will function as intended.

Also, wouldn't hurt to make sure your battery is fully charged. It may be too weak from all the starting attempts, so make sure it is fully charged.

Good Luck.

It tested out fine.. I just cleaned the starter off from all the gunk and also cleaned the wires and she fired right up... aww that exhaust gets me going everytime.. but thanks to everyone that helped out

Also, I know what you mean that the problems never stop. Sometimes I wonder why I deal with the Jeep as it is a neverending project. A love-hate relationship I suppose!

hey man! that's why i buy jeeps! they never get boring. I get bored if i have a car than never has problems lol. which is why i traded my volvo for another xj. im on the 5th xj now and it never gets old :) however, if your not mechanically inclined and you have to take it into the stealership every time, then i can understand where your coming from :P

as for the starting grinding problem, dude just take the starter off, use a socket on the crank shaft and turn it to inspect the flexplate...not flywheel flywheels are for manual trans :-P make sure the teeth are still good. otherwise you'll hear the grinding noise forever. then bolt that SOB back on! :)

ahhh man i was to late! prob is solved :'( good work boys!!!

well i dont feel like re-reading all the posts so ill give ya some ideas, sorry if its repetitive. take the cluster out, look at the back, does it look abnormally discolored? does it smell burt? did u check the voltage from all sending units with a volt meter?

it happened right after i did the tranny and when i turn the acc on the temp guage like resets and my odometer and speedo dont work either... hopefully its something easy

Do you mean air conditioning, A/C, or are you turning the key to acc, accessory?

should i try checking the fuses and back of the cluster and if someone could post a pic of their fuse box cover for the kick panel so i can tell which fuse is what it would be great 93xj(95aw4, 231 tcase)

ya def check all fuses. You might as well check all the fuses. who knows, you might find something blown that is totally unrelated and fixes a different problem you might have. (happened to me) lol. check em all bud.
