very very handy, better than the official community message boards I think, I had some initial startup issues since my laptop is a gateway, I was able to clear them up quickly. Also, make sure that your cd burner can burn a true ISO image, freeware burners such as alcohol and gnomebaker are out there if you need them. It is a live cd after you burn it, meaning that you can run the complete OS off the cd, THEN if you like it just tell it to install and continue playing while it installs in the background.

thanks... as I am currently on my wifes mac so I can figure out why this ubuntu won't let me connect to my wireless network. it also deleted a few windows files, so I can't go back to XP now too.

truth is I am not bothered as I would careless if windows got screwed over, but I would like to get back on the weeeb with it.

If your taking the linux route, check out wubi

http://wubi-installer.org/

Check out the FAQ link in the upper right corner of the site for more info. I just used it to install Ubuntu again last night so I can vouch it works great if you just want to test the OS. If you are looking to go permanent doing a full install or an official dual boot would be better, but for trial purposes its great (the FAQ explains more why its not great for permanent use). It may be included in ubuntu now, I'm not sure, I know it was in the previous release, it may have been removed. But that program is great, it runs, gives you the option it set up your username/pw, then installs linux and you run it like you would any dual boot (choose OS at start up). It even downloads Ubuntu for you if you dont have the image of it already, and gives you option of Ubuntu, Kubuntu, etc.. If you dont like linux and want to get rid of it to free up space.. just boot up windows and go to add/remove programs. Uninstalls linux just like you would uninstall any program out there. Fast, simple... even my parents could use it easily and thats saying something.

Otherwise, another vote for AVG. I heard bit defender is good, but its like 20-30$ for something like 3 licences. Not bad since you can buy it and install on a couple computers if you have them, or give one key to a friend. I never used it since I just go free/linux myself.

I used a program called ndiswrapper combined with a windows driver to get my wireless working. Basically you end up blacklisting the linux wireless driver and having it use a windows based driver instead. Did you run it off the CD first or did you go strait to the install, it should not have deleted anything if run as a live cd. It took a few days on my wifes computer searching tutorials to get everything just right. As a result I am a lot better in the terminal window now.
