I leave town for a weekend...

Since I'm bored, I thought I'd post some more pics from my trip to Cali from a few weekends ago. Enjoy!

One of the cool things about the whole weekend are the cars you see, not just at the track or at Concours, but in parking lots. For Michael:

Watching the 2006 Toyota F1 car turning laps. He's coming out of the corkscrew here and down onto the front straight:

DSC00790.jpg

Tempremental beasts, the car had to be attended to a LOT:

DSC00796.jpg

The little known Carrol Shelby/Toyota racing team from the late '60s. These are Toyota 2000GTs, very rare cars that were a Japanese attempt at an E-type competitor. Yamaha built the 2.0 I-6s for Toyota and assembled the cars too.

The BMW "bat-mobile" 3.0 CSL leading a Porsche 935 and Mercury Capri through turn 3:

Bobby Rahal driving a works BMW M1 in the same corner:

DSC00826.jpg

One of the cars in the Historic Trans-Am class. This is the best racing out of any of the classes...they're not worth enough money (yet) to worry about swapping paint:

DSC00841.jpg

Lots of big names:

I saw this note in the windshield of the Dan Gurney AAR Cuda. Priceless!

You can see it on the dashboard in this pic:

One of the perks of knowing the Chief Steward; beer with the course workers:

DSC00846.jpg

DSC00848.jpg

Of course, after a couple beers, they conned me into agreeing to come down early next year and be a course worker.

One of the displays at the RM auction:

So I'm a Tucker fanatic. Some of you might know of the car from the (excellent...and Oscar nominated) movie that Francis Ford Coopola made in the late '80s. Others of you might not have a clue what I'm talking about. Either way, number 36 was at the RM sale (only 51 were built) and I went a little crazy with pics. Here some are:

This is the heart of the Tucker; Franklin air-cooled helocopter engine:

Beautiful. The vent is actually cast aluminum:

DSC00859.jpg

DSC00860.jpg

The innovative "Tucker Cyclops Eye" that turned with the front wheels, allowing you to see where you're going, before you get there. Modern car companies (notable BMW and Lexus) are just starting to do the same things. Once again, 50+ years ahead of it's time....

This car was beautifully restored, and the price it brought reflected the high quality. I was getting pretty wrapped up in this car (as you can tell) and happened to talk to one of the Haggerty reps there (they do collector car financing and insurance). On a whim, I asked him if they'd finance me on the Tucker. I gave them some information on me and they bought me a couple drinks...and said I was approved up to $500,000 on #36. I had to put my house up as collateral, but they said they'd do it. :D

I had absolutely ZERO intention of bidding, but it was kinda cool to know I could. It ended up bringing $550,000. At least I tried.... ;)

Lots of stuff to drool over:

GORGEOUS early Lamborghini:

Now that's an interior:

DSC00874.jpg

One of the RUF Yellow Bird top speed record cars. This one did well over 200 mph.

DSC00895.jpg

Speed TV's Alain de Cadenet interveiwing the owner just before his Cobra is sold:

DSC00897.jpg

Really dark, but this is a McLaren SLR...in the parking garage of our hotel...along with seven Lamborghinis, four Ferraris and a slew of Bentleys and Rolls Royces.

F40 GT LM and an F1:

Beautiful German asses:

First mass-produced fuel-injected car, 300 SL "Gullwing":

Literally "behind the scenes" at the Russo and Stelle auction:

Well, that's all I've gotten around to downloading. If anyone wants to see more, I'll put some more up when I get the rest downloaded.

Thanks Matt, you know my style!! But I will take the dark blue one with white stripes!!

Very nice!! It's like a "Datsun Fairlady E-type" ;)

Are you shure about this next one?? Looks like a 914 or 916-6 to me?

PS. I made my pic's. I would like the Blue Cobra and the Yellow F1. There are many others that caught my eye, but I just don't know where I would park them or when I would drive them:)

PPS. That Tucker looks FAR nicer than it would have looked new!!

Oops, my bad. Yeah, that's a 914-6. Here's an M1, as driven by Bobby Rahal:

DSC00830.jpg

How about this for a 914? 350 small block meets small mid-engine sports car. :D 914-8? ;)

DSC00784.jpg

-----Matt-----

Ian, You got to know which pic's to question with Matt;)

That looks much more like an M1 to me!!

That has got to be the Sweetest looking 914 I have ever seen!! Not normally into these type's of mods, but that is Cool. It it drives anything close to as nice as it looks, it would be A LOT of fun!!

I wish I'd gotten a pic of the motor, but here's one from behind. The car was beautifully done:

Totally sure. The engine was built by the Air Cooled Motor Company, which was formerely Franklin, before being retro-fitted with water cooling jackets for use in the Tucker.

-----Matt-----

Ah, gotcha. So I'm not completely retarded ... oh, wait. :confused1

Michael, I'm with you on the Cobra, but the brushed aluminum is pretty damn cool, tough call there.

x2. Give me the brushed aluminum!

-----Matt-----
Don't get me wrong. I think the brushed aluminum is cool. But just not the right car to do it to. Not original enough for me.
Now a Delorean that would look cool ;)

That's stainless steel, you wannabe!

And you're right: I've never seen a Cobra in US Racing colors.... Never seen that before!

This "wannabe" want's it in Aluminum because it is lighter than the SS:roll:

I didn't say it was unusual, just "right". The SS is really sweet, just not the right car.

Matt,

Saw your comment about the Parking garage and some of the cars you saw.

After NW Fest, we went down to Disneyland and my cousin spent a day showing us around some CA beach areas. He has gone on and on about how it has blown his mind in reguards to the cars he passes on the road and just parked around town.

Anyway, I mention my daily driver here and there. It is a blast to drive, but not worth a fraction, compared to some of the less expensive cars you have pictured above. I love when people have now clue what they are getting theirselves into. Thought I would toss a pic up considering your interests in racing:

And my cousin's car:

I still need to download all of our pics from CA.

Goes Like Hell... Some more!!!

Me Likey.

I used to pimp an 85 Shelby Charger (Maroon/Grey) with a few mods.

Loved that car.
