I could use some stereo wiring advice

hey guys,

i just finished installing a chrysler (91) xj factory headunit into my amc (87) xj. i also installed a aftermarket amplified antenna that i bought at a local parts store.

i'm having two small problems,
1) when i turn the jeep off for a while it does not save it's memory. i.e. it doesn't save the presets or the station it was on when the jeep is turned off.
2) is the antenna. it works great when the jeep is off, but as soon as i turn on the engine the signal is horrible. it has a lot of noise. there is a separate wire that runs from the signal amplifier. on the directions it said to connect it to a constant source of 12v DC power. I ran it a blue wire w/ white tracer, that blue wire w/ white tracer is connected to the illumination wire on the headunit.

is there a better candidate that i can run that signal amplifier to? i had searched about this but i couldn't really find what i was looking for. someone had said that they just grounded the headunit to the body. I tried that and it didn't work for me.

i'm hoping someone has the answers....

you didnt hook up the power right. there are two power wires. yellow is constant, and red is the acc one. check those. that should fix your power issue.

as far as the antenna... is it grounded to the car?

change the ground for the ant. the noise your hearing is interference from the engines electronics. find an area to ground it away from any other grounds. stay away from areas with multiple grounds or large single grounds (like the engine ground, batt ground, aftermarket stuff etc) and it will give less interference.

Pink is constant 12V, and if the antenna needs a 12v source, then to the battery it should go, and a proper ground

yeah hey the constant has to be hook into to the battery direct.

and as far as the ant. it is a ground problem, im have the same problem with my 94 xj cuz i have a inturnal roll cage that bolts to the body so i am tryin to find a filter to hook in on the power side with my cb i get a lota motor noise and its real bad when i turn the aux fan on so i would try that most big truck stop have them but not alot of them in my area but i the same problem with my old truck

i just took mine out on my 92, and yellow was constant.

do you mean to get a better ground for the headunit itself? the antenna didnt have a separate wire for a ground.the only way i can see the antenna grounding is with the mounting base, and that has a isolator.

the noise you are hearing is normally caused due to ground loop.

check the grounds on the HU.

I dont normally mess with aftermarket antennas. i can help you out with the other issue though
