how to remove cross pin from xj dana 44

did some searching, but not sure, so i'll ask my noob question. im getting ready to change out the gears on my xj dana 44. im stuck trying to remove the cross pin. im able to slightly move it up/down, but i notice what appears to be c clips holding it in place by the spider gears. not sure if i need to remove those first. please help
