Hey everyone i took my front doors off and love it haha
Well i know that they help with the flexing of the unibody and what not but i was wondering if someone could help on how to build half doors outta the factory doors???
I started on half doors and got one side done cause i love the way tube doors look on an xj but wouldnt mind trying to make some half doors just for fun
and will tube doors help a bit with some structural integrity???

I found a write up on here on them..I started mine but need to finish..I had tube doors and sold them..Half doors help keep some of the crap out..

This is where i got the idea to build them..

I just started with a spare door i had and cut it slowly till i saw what i wanted..Then just capped them with sheet metal i had laying around..

The doors don't add to the structural integrity of your jeep.

I have no idea how to decipher anything else you wrote!
You want to know how to build a half door, but you already made one?

why? youre telling me that those 2 little hinges welded to the a-pillar and the door strikers bolted to the b-pillar add a noticeable amount of structural integrity for the unibody? so does the rear hatch add structural integrity as well?

back on topic. what info are you trying to find if you already made one? any specific problems you had?

Actually they do. I've read many stories of people twisting their unibodies pretty bad when going doorless.

However running half doors keeps you legal in some places, as for keeping the rigidity you could always put a length of DOM tubing with plates on the ends where the bottom of the window would be.

That way you still have the visibility of half doors yet the strength of full doors.

There unibodies would have twisted ether way

I read those stories too but decided to do it anyways and my doors line up perfect with multiple wheelin trips in rocks. I don't believe they add structure integrity either.

He said she said..I beat the crap out of mine all the time with and without doors..But i only been doing it for 3 years..My doors slide on and off just as easy as they did 3 years ago..My doors open with a front tire off the ground 3' in the air..So i would think with that much twist it would show up then right..

Thats funny because I twisted the unibody to the point that I had to replace it and the doors were on. From an engineering perspective, the doors don't have the structural integrity and enough mounting points to provide much if any torsional rigidity.

Well we can all agree that going doorless is illegal in most places with vehicles that werent designed to go doorless aka Wranglers, FJ40s, etc. therefore half doors is an option.

Didnt mean to start a pissing match.

1. the doors provide no structure, stick your hand out the window while wheeling and feel the seem where your door and A pillar meet.

2. mines been getting beat hard for the last 7 yrs and hasn't had doors on for the last 5, before that it only had doors in the winter and i've noticed no difference between having them on or off.

no i started on tube doors haha and people were telling me that i lose alot of structural rigidity if i take them off and that is why i left the rears on
so should i worry about the structural aspect or no???
and is there any write ups on half doors???

almost everyone in this thread has said no you dont have to worry about it. Me personally I'm airing on the side of caution with my rig and leaving them on.

As for half door write ups if you google Jeep XJ half doors you'll get lots of links.

nobody said he was taking his doors off...

i cant imagine making them is all that hard. cut the door opening to the shape you want, preferably so you can still use the stock door opening mechanism, gut the rest of the door, put metal on opening left in door from cutting in half, paint, install, drink beer.
