So how negotiable are salvage yard prices? I'm looknig for some parts, and the yards seem very proud of what they've got, based on what they are asking... I suck at bargaining, so try to avoid it, but these days, I gotta do it...

I suck at it aswell. but if you simply say "Oh forget it.. at that price i'll wait" it works wonders!

While on one hand, you dont want to leave something behind, that you spent time pulling, But Honestly, THEY dont want it back either, because it will likely not go BACK in the yard so they wont make anything!

I cant negotiate very well.. unless i am at a yard..

I have trouble too. I have no problem negotiating prices between private party sales, but I can't ever get them to budge when I go to junkyards... maybe they're used to this type of thing or see my lack of confidence... lol

I didn't think they did negotiate?

The Pick N Pull's I frequent don't. Usually if I bring up a part, they just look in their book for the price and ring it up. They will usually throw in any tag a long parts.. sometimes I can influence what they think the part is.. but usually its a wash.

I have noticed it. Depends on the yard. There are yard that have a set price like pull a part here in lynnwood and there are places like lacey auto that's oned and operated by the owner who has more parts then sence and can nigotiate. Just depends on yard rules. I also noticed that it helps to go to the same yard frequantly even if just to look around. Once the employees get to know you you can get a buddy discount. Ie get a asembly for price of one of the parts....

The worst the dude at the counter can do is say "no" or "we don't negotiate" and then you pay full price anyway, so why not make a realistic offer? Don't low ball him by half-or-less of what they want, but I never hesitate to say "$25? How about.....$20/18/etc"....

My experience around here is that they only budge on price on higher ticket items. T-case, trannies, engines etc.. I purchased a NP231 locally with 90k miles on it from a local junk yard. They were asking $350 and I told them NO WAY, they can be bought online for $200 or less. I did get them to go down to $275(Still too much IMO, but I needed it that day). Anyway, smaller ticket items like hoods and interiors pieces I have had no luck getting them to go down even like $5 (unless the part had damage that wasn't normal). I suppose price negotiation depends on the place. Like mentioned before the worst they can say is no. But my best luck has been to tell them I can get it cheaper elsewhere and that I would like to buy it today from them if they will budge on the price. If not then tell them you will buy elsewhere and wait a week for it to arrive.

in the portland area there is no negotiating unless its a private party, because all the decent yards are chains with set pricing, tey even have core charges

Pull a part also tends to pick the cheaper option when they decide what a part is. I'm usually pretty happy with the price I get.

Not really true, There has been 3 different times i paid way less.
Pick n pull on foster:
Spiffy Rear ZJ cargo consol box.. chick said 22.50, i paid 6.90
Gauge cluster: said 28.00 I paid 12.00
Fuel line (12" long plastic) : Said 9.00 Paid 1.00

Depends on the yard, the guy behind the counter, the part, your attitude, what story you can spin, &c &c.

Best one I had was buying an AW4 (for my own information, more than anything else) from a full-serv dismantler that has since folded up its tents and gone home - probably due to some asinine CA reg or another they didn't want to deal with anymore...

They had one lying about. I asked them if it "worked when pulled." He said he thought so, and was asking $200 for the thing. I said "The first thing I'm going to do when I get it home is tear it to bits. I've not worked on an AW4 before, I now have three of them, and I'd like to know more about them before too long."

"I can let you have it as a core - no warranty whatever, except that it's buildable - for thirty bucks."

"Sold!"

Okay, looks like the price is fixed (I was talking to Foster's, for those in PDX). Another option is getting it shipped from out-of-area (I was poking around online at some yards in CA), but I can't imagine they'll negotiate over the phone. It looks like they have separate pricing for insurance, repair shop, and retail, so I know there must wiggle room. Just gotta figure out the magic words...
BTW, I'm looking for a rear axle; my D35 is about to dump....

Prices mostly depend on supply and demand just like anything else. If you want a part that sells as soon as it hits the yard and very few yards can keep them in stock then the price is not going to be negotiable. If every yard has lots of them then the price can be very negotiable.
First be very courteous to the sales person and don't act like you know more than they do even if you do.
Second don't ask how many 8.25s they have in the yard or Dana 60's. Ask for the part by year model and part type. For example "Do you have any rear axle assemblies for a 98 Cherokee?" If you are a smart a$$ you will not get a discount. Also, be loyal to a couple of yards and sales people even if they have to order parts in from another yard for you. You will benefit from it when you are looking for something that yard has in stock if they think you are a loyal customer. Don't tell them you can find it cheaper online or argue with them over price just tell them what you would be willing to pay and would they accept your offer. Most yards can see most other yards parts and prices. Prices do vary somewhat but they will usually be similar on a similar part with same miles condition etc.

i know a guy who has a d44 for a xj. he wants 300 ob0o for it though. pm and ill give you his number

What the hell are you talking about? We negotiate with the guy in Vancouver all the time.

I did a write up of local yards between Seattle and Graham 12-13 months ago. Pretty sure I hit 80% of them at least. If I recall, I was pretty thorough.
