my xj is a 1990 and it leaks whenever it rains or gets washed. The water seems to pour out from under the dash board on both the driver and passenger side. I have had the windshield taken off and put back on twice now and still no change in the leaking. Where could the opening be??

i have the same issue with the drivers side and cant trace it ? Tho on another jeep i found that the area around the brake booster was letting in some water .

Have you taken off the cowl plate at the base of the windshield and looked in the corners? Sometimes leaves and other debris will get caught in there and help to cause the body to rust faster. My old Dodge truck was REAL good at leaking because of this.

Have you checked the condition of the heater box seals at the firewall? Also, what about where the wiring harness passes thru the firewall?

Di you re-install the windshield yourself, or did a shop do it? If a shop did it, they might have a "no leak" grnty. If you did it, you might want to talk to a shop about re-sealing it for you.

I have seen older XJ's with rust holes in the wheel wells, leaking to the inside, where the floor boards meet the fire wall. Remove the plastic fender liner and look for rust holes at the panel seams. Also crawl underneath and make sure there are no holes in the floors. There are also some round plugs in the floors about 1 inch or so across that can rust or leak.

I just emptied about 3 pounds of leaves and crap out of my AC inlet and the drains under the fenders before last winter. That stopped the leaking. (took both fenders off to clean it out)

I just traded my '85 Cherokee Woodie this spring. Drove it for 17 years before the rust won out. A few years ago, I experienced the same problem with the water accumulation on the floor (usually passenger's side) after rains.
I wasted a lot of time using silicone caulk on the windshield & the skid plates for the roof carrier with no good result.
It turned out to be under the hood at the firewall where the blower motor (or maybe the heater box, I forget) went into the passenger side.
They sealed the appliance at the factory with black caulk which shrunk over time. Just get someone to play a water hose over the firewall (under the hood) on the passenger's side near the fender area... just be ready to holler when the water comes gushing through.
regards,
jlex.
