how involved to install an sunroof

I´ve got a new sun roof in the garage (still in the box) and an XJ fun truck, that could probably use an emergancy exit, if I ever lay it on it´s side.
Look at the wifes XJ (that low speed rolled) and see the A pillers folded back, way to close to the headrests.
And say to myself, not putting in the sun roof, without a roll cage.
I´ve put a sun roof in a couple of PU´s, not real hard. Getting the headliner just right, isn´t easy. Masking tape and a sheet metal nibbler, make a pretty clean installation. Used an OEM quality mastic sealer (same stuff they use for the rain gutters and many of the body joints OEM). Most sunroofs, leak at sometime or another, even the factory installed units.

just go for it and make a write up, be sure to take lots of pics.

I had a sunroof in my 89xj, but the "glass" broke and it leaked like crazy, so now I just have a big hole in the roof! Mayv\be I should replace it or something.
Not hard to install just get some air shears and start hackin.

would you stand directly under an 8 foot round funnel in a rainstorm and enjoy it?

if you can answer yes to that question, then install the sunroof, if you say no, then leave it alone.

I for one hate sunroofs. it's all the bad things about a topless vehicle combined with all the bad things of a vehicle with a roof all rolled into one shitty package.

imho don't try this at home go to several places that do this and ask them stuf like can you get the cherokee kit that adapts to the ribs in the roof, and what is your reputation with them leaking, and it they have a waranty on leeks if so for how long. also i have found that sun roofs leak for a few reasons, #1 $hitty install #2 the seal goes bad, #3 d*mn it i left to sun roof open again #4 in a carwash due to the extreme water pressure, or #5 if the washers go bad in the glass mounts. and all but #1 are easy fixes

I've got a sunroof in my '90. It's nice when it sunny....but when it rains the thing leaks like crazy. Any ideas on how to fix it?

I had one put in my 94 about two years ago. It was specifically made for xj's with the ribs molded to the sungless frame. Anyhow, I haven't had any problems with it yet. No leaks, nothing... AS for structural, that i dont know... If you want a pic I can get one for ya.

ive been thinking about T-top windows. (with an internal cage) it'd be cool to see a sunroof go in to get ideas...
