How bad would this be for an XJ

this is why i fear more than anything else... handing the keys to my 4.0 5spd MJ to anybody at a parking place or anywhere to work on it.

terrifies me.

I've got to work in SF every now and again, and the parking lots there tend to "double up" and want your keys.

Funny thing - I give them the keys, but they still can't start the rig (and that's the way I like it.) I don't even take it in for tyres - that's why I have a set of spare wheels. Smog check? Thanks, I'll sit right here and do what you need done, but you don't operate my vehicle (and read the work order - I crossed that line out, and showed it to you before I signed it...)

There are not a whole lot of people I trust with my truck. I can count most of them on the fingers of one nose...

No worries, he works at a car dealership. A mostly new car dealership too which is what scaresme/pisses me off. He got in trouble once because the abs light came on in a honda (i forget which model) after he did this reverse stunt. He says its fun to do in the rain.

I call BS. New cars will not allow this. I had a 2001 Chevy Malibu as a company car. Driving at 50+ mph (or whatever speed), you could put the auto in 1st and NOTHING would change. It would act as though it was in drive until your speed was low enough to accept being in 1st gear, then it would downshift. Never tried reverse, but I bet it would be the same.

I thought there was some time of limiter on this too, maybe he is bullshitting me, but whenever we are driving hell be like thos skid marks are from me. Maybe just lieing to be cool. Maybe he only does it with the 50 or so used cars they have at one time. I'm not sure.

yes, this would happen on 1-2 on newer cars. but not on some older ones. the easiest way to shift from drive to neutral. is just pull the handle not pushing the button. and this way it will lock into neutral. same for reverse.

Amen!

A friend of mine owns a 1971 DeTomaso Pantera... took it to the stealership (Lincoln/Mercury!) for something or other back when it was still nearly new. One of the lot jockies managed to break an axle shaft whilst dickin' around in it.

Dealer had to pay to ship the entire tranny/axle assembly to ZF in Italy for repair.

Probably was a bad day for the employee.

You design a low-gear "interlock"... because you assume some bonehead will yank it into 1st at 75mph.

If *I* was an engineer, I wouldn't anticipate that some bonehead would throw it into reverse... and sure heck not deliberately!!

Confession: I did it in my '84 Olds Omega... my first car. Column-shift. I had been in low gear, then "overshot" when putting it back in drive. Scared the living crap outta me (a tranny overhaul woulda cost me more than the car did!)... but it restarted, and never showed any ill effects.

my brother accidently did that to a volvo not sure how.
probly going faster than 30 idk.
all the lights came on and it completely shut off. started fine no problems afterwards.
Volvos are good about shutting down immediately if anything goes wrong that could damage the engine. What probably happened though is that the computer shut the engine off and that turns all the dash lights on.

On one of my old cars was a Volvo and I blew a heater hose going down the interstate. It began to overheat very rapidly and it was touching the edge of the red before I could get to the right and off the road. It went from straight up and down on the gauge to touching the red in less than 30 seconds. The second the gauge touched the edge of the red, the computer shut the engine off. It wouldn't restart till after the engine had cooled down. I thought that was pretty cool since most cars won't do that.

Let me just say that your friend is an Asshat and I hope he gets fired. Nothing good can come of those kinds of stunts.

I agree. I hate people who don't respect others property. No car deserves treatment like that even if they are a Honduh.

For those who do it accidentally, I'd think that there'd be a bit of accellerated wear on the clutches and bands in the tranny and probably a little burning of the ATF in the torque converter.

when my 300zx stalls all the lights come on.

I was with a friend once in a 5.4L Expedition and I have no idea what he was thinking, but he ment to shift it into netural and Rev the engine by some people, but put it in reverse by accident and reved it while doing around 35 the back end started bouncing around and going nuts.... Pretty scary, didnt hurt the car at the time dunno what to say 80K down the road and the engine didnt kill itself he just put it back into D.

i did it once on a ford escort because i wanted to see what it would do, From that day forward it would not lock the car in place when i park.

it made the same clicking noise that it does when you plug it in to park while moving.

i think that the effect on the tranny would differ according to the age and strength of the tranny...
