Homemade lift Q's

A buddy of mine just picked up an Xj on the cheap w/ a 2" lift in the front but none in the rear. I gave him the options of lifting (blocks, add-a-leaf, shackles) and he mulled it over, but is considering doing it another way. I wanted to see what you guys thought about this to see if I should more actively try to steer him away from it... or if it's ok. I'm just a 'don't re-invent the wheel' type of guy.

The idea is to unhook the leafsprings altogether and weld some drop brackets on the frame for both the front and rear mounts, thus lowering the entire suspension two - maybe four - inches. One reason he figures is to keep the drive-line angle proper. But I figured if this was a good idea, more people would be doing it! But I dunno... he has a pretty good mind for custom fabbing stuff like this... but this is (I believe) his first attempt at offroad tech.

Also, one other Q on this project - if he does this to 4", will it give him a true 4"? I think it would, but I know to get a 2" lift on shackles, you gotta go w/ shackles that are 4" longer... so I didn't know if that applied to this as well... I don't think so.

See http://go.jeep-xj.info/. Marcus (GoJeep) has done this mod. Labor hours have value, so figure in the time needed for each type of lift. Just because something is cheap doesn't make it the best option, or even a safe one.
