Home fabriated laptop mount. (56K beware)

Well done! Looks sweet!

Thanks all, yeah its Delrin like I mentioned in the post. Its not going anywhere, Delrin is hard stuff.

Like I also mentioned in the post (does anyone read anymore...lol)

Haha I completely missed that. I only look at pictures pretty much.
Ya, Delrin is some tough stuff, and will be fine with the tapped holes.

What if you cut a notch in like an upside down you one the top of the support and added a pin to the inside of the mount shaft. That way the pin would slide down into the notch on the left to hold the laptop in place facing the driver. Then you just slide it up, turn it, slide it back down into the right notch for the passenger. Just a quick idea I thought I'd pass on.

I love the stuff, I used to machine a LOT of delrin for my old business, and it machines like butter. Holds a nice clean edge, and will certainly hold threads. Its kinda pricey, but it works awesome.

That is very nice! I've always wanted to build one but I could never make one that looks good.

I agree with the poster who said holding it down by the battery is a bad idea. I think you should use tabs like you did at the front.

Also, have you thought about adding some kind of suspension for the sake of the hard drive?

When are you going to post it here? http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=45

I may look into putting a couple rotating clamps on the backside of the housing instead of only on the battery. Although, the front lip fits fairly tight on the boddy of the Laptop. I personally dont think the battery will be going anywhere, since it a chore just to take it off, but better safe than sorry.

I already posted it on the portal, its in my build thread here:

Nice work. What's is that gas door looking thing between the seats?

The one on the floor looks like a drain to me.

-Alex

Alex has it, I have vinyl floors, and put two 4 inch deckplate drains (Like on a boat) for cleaning purposes or if I ever flood the jeep. Works like a champ.

They have a cam lock type lid, and a big rubber o-ring to make it all water tight/air tight when in place, and just a quick turn to remove them.

Thanks Glen, I turned down a channel in the upright in my lathe, and have an ide of how to do it. I will update this post when I get it done. I stll have to shorten the whole thing by 2 inches also and will do it all at the same time.

dig the cupholders too. i just noticed them.

Thanks man, spent way too much time on those also, but im pretty sure its the only billet delrin, and aluminum cupholders in an XJ... with speed holes to boot!

Thanks everyone, great ideas and comments.

Hey guys. A much cheaper, more compact and affordable vehicle laptop mount is the Onyx laptop mount. I use them in all my vehicles. I equipped 3 of my vehicles for less than 1 RAM mount. They look much nicer and are much less obtrusive. Check em out here www.dura-mounts.com You can install them to the seat bolt or for an extra $5 get the floor drill bracket. They install in under 5 minutes and can be used for more than just holding your laptop. Simply unscrew one screw that holds on the table part and now you can screw on a video camera or digi cam. Awesome. Figured I'd share with you guys. BTW good job on your fabricated one.

Nice, thats a decent alternative to the ram mount, thanks for the link.

Here is a little update to my mount, changed a few things. After driving around with the mount as it was, I realized it was a little shakey front to back. The way the mount is traingulated, its very solid from left to right, but not much to stabilize it front to back. So, I welded on a little tab and mounted it to the console, and now she is solid as a rock.

Also, I needed to shorten the over all mount about 2 inches, add a thumb screw to lock in the plate in either the driver or passenger position. Got all that accomplished this afternoon, so here is the update.

Here is the plate I welded to the stantion to mount the Delrin to. Excuse the crappy welds. I ran out of argon on my Hobart and had to use the little flux welder when I made this.

I turned down this rod in the lathe so it fits nicely into the tube. I also cut a small shallow groove for the thumb screw. Obviously this was all done before the welding.

This is the thumb screw I used. I have no idea where it came from, but it works great for what I wanted. I dont usualy throw out anything like this stuff as I usually end up needing it down the road... point in case.

Welded up the bracket for front to back support, little overkill since its mounting into plastic, but I had some scrap laying around.

Someone asked me if the passenger seat still moved forward... yep, it still does.

I countersunk/drilled two dimples in the rod. Each dimple is a locking point for the mount, one for the driver position, and one for the passenger position.

Sweet! Totally amazing!

Off topic but, what kind of modification did you do to get that full screen head unit in? I am replacing my desktop want to build a nice little enclosure and put a small screen like the one you have for the screen for the computer (the desktop would be hard wired into the Jeep).

Not much. Its not a head unit persey, its just a monitor. So, its only about 3/4" thick. Only about 1/2 of it sticks through the panel into the backside. The panel I made with some aluminum sheeting and my little milling machine. The only thing I had to do was trim a little plastic (but DONT cut into the AC ducts), and moved my A/C controls up to the original radio spot.
