Hifonics Bxi amps

Hi Y'all,

I put in a 12" sub in my XJ using an old amp with only 160 w rms IIRC. It sounds good but doesn't push the sub enough even at full gain. I've hear Hifonics makes good, afordable amps. I like the idea of a class D amp for the efficiency. But looking at the Brutus amps the response is only rated down to 20 hz. That seems pretty high for a sub. Maybe it's good for SPL comps, but I want it to sound good and I love very low freq. Anyone have experience with these amps, and maybe have some other recomendations to make?

Well you can only hear in the frequency range of 20-20,000 hz so that is as low as you need to go. I have never used Hifonics but I think they are pretty good amps. I have a Autotek sub amp right now and it is great and very very tough. I have been using it for 5 years now powering two 12inch subs.

I don't think you would be able to tell the difference between 20hz and 18hz. I really would not consider that a determining factor in the purchase of an amplifier.

Only side-by-side, and it is very close. But 20 and 15 is noticeable. I haven't measured it, but I think my system gets down well below 20. I'd rather have the limit be the driver, not the amp.

What's funny is the subsonic filter on the bxi can be set as low as 15hz.

i had a brutus 1000 for a long time, it pushed the HELL out of my 15s, and i would still have it if it didnt get stolen. i'll be buying a new one to replace it, best amp ive had. never shut down and always ran cool, and i had it hanging upside down on a ceiling mounted rack like you're not supposed to do :D

I've not used anything by Hifonics, if you're interested in "affordable" you may want to check out Parts Express (www.partsexpress.com.) They've usually got decent prices on things, and they're set up for the DIY audiophile/home theatre crowd. I've bought some gear from them and been quite happy with the results (and they do writeups in all of their catalogues on customer projects, so you could get some ideas - if nothing else.)

What's wrong with handing it upside down?
