I didn't want to pollute Dutch's build thread, so I started this one.

I went for an axle yesterday, thought about your posts the whole time. The only thing that truly worried me was being alone: If things went bad, would I be able to make my own 911 call?

That adjustment easily doubled the time involved.

Flame away!

Yeppirs! I used wood, and whatever else was laying around. The blocks were allready set under the back so I left them alone.

so did you need that entire front axle? because i would love to steal the hub/spindle assemblies from you. i'd even be willing to let you steal some cash from me in return.

LOL Those outers are one of the main reasons for taking this axle. They'll give me disc brakes, true power steering, and an easier to match gear set for my '74.

I know I've seen a '79 at Western, but people have allready taken parts. I'll see if there is enough left when I go today.

My understanding is that you need to take the outers because the spindles are different? I've also been told the hub locks will swap between D-44s pretty much regardless of year.

I'm loading up now. PM a phone number if you want a real-time report from the yards. I'll check again before I leave.

I was afraid to click on this thread with a title like that................

"Got some wood ................ for ya..........." :kissyou:

:D

......should take that whole front axle and arms/brackets off that thing and do a XJ front long arm conversion...............

Thought was there, I decided to put the word "pictures" so I don't get censored right off the bat. :gag:

Late '70s is one of the axles that don't convert well because the mounts are integral to the tube. There's just not much you can do with them.

The axles under my '74 are another story. ;)

Why not just go to an auto parts store, and get all new stuff? I would think that most of the items in those outers are pretty much junk anyway.

Only thing that I would think that you would need are the spindles and caliper backing plate.

This belongs to a private owner Phillip. He lives "up Nort".

$$$, $$$, and more $$$.

The truck was pretty much restored. The owner took it to a national chain store who did brake work and replaced a fuel line. Twenty minutes after he got it home from the shop it caught fire. They pretty much told him to get ******.

It's gonna cost me some fab work, some cash, and a whole lotta bubba points. I don't have the $$$ to buy what I have in front of me, I feel like a bandit.

would I be able to make my own 911 call?

There was this one time when I was in a crawl space under a house that I thought I was going to have to call 911 on myself.....

But the hole that I was wedged into was going to make getting the phone to my ear would have been a problem.......

So I wiggled backards until I could get use of my arms again, by then the 911 call wasn't needed......

Well I've been to Checker and AutoZone's websites and they don't carry the spindles.

Good thing you didn't have to call 911, I'm kinda surprised you didn't! Cinder blocks holding vehicles up are a Very Bad Idea, please be careful.
I was leary of the cement blocks myself. Every place I put my body was with the thought of something falling. That's why it took so damn long. I think the closest I got to being hurt was while trying to load it by myself...at night...after dark...when no one would hear me scream...no one would come. I have to go back. I'll remember to take a come-along this time, drag it into the truck. I'll also hit a time when I can get help with horsing the thing around.

Daryl, I'm glad you like my wood. It served it's purpose well.

Disclaimer: Don't do what I did kiddies. It will make you cry!

Maybe I am confused, but it seems to me that you are taking the outters off of the Bronco you pictured above, and are putting them on a Bronco that you have with drum brakes.

The outers that you have pictured above look like they have been sitting around for awhile. I suppose you could have the rotors turned. But the bearings are used, and Im not sure I would trust them. Brake pads I am not sure how they are, but you might as well replace them while your there. Calipers, no idea about them. Could be frozen and locked up.

Now that I think about it, I guess I cant really tell the condition of those parts, but I would be hesitant to put a bunch of work into used parts that were on a burned truck.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I ment the only things I thought he would need off the new axle were the backing plates and the spindles.

All of the rest you can buy at auto parts stores. Spindles you have to get them used, or online somewhere. Im sure Vatozone or Checker can get them if you go in and ask, but I bet they are a pretty penny.
