Lots of post here on pre-91 XJs not starting, including some of my own, but will summarize below:
- Turn key on, do you hear the fuel pump? should be yes.
- go to schrader valve on fuel rail (MPI) or near the TB (TBI) and press it in and fuel should squirt out. If not, no fuel pressure.
- More likely electrical though. Check for spark while starting (pull HV coil wire). If not:
- run a jumper from the battery neg. term. to the frame of the coil. If it starts, it's a bad ground connection.
- Disconnect the crankshaft sensor (follow sensor wire from the transmission bell housing on the driver side). Reconnect. That's a common cure.
- Disconnect the distributor signal wire connector. Reconnect.
- After that, it gets more detailed, so try these and tell if it works or identifies the problem. Then go from there.
