well getting ready to do my rearend havent done one before but about to attempt it in the AM, I live in michigan and have a 91 Cherokee Limited, the rearend is shot, I opened it up and got 2 HUGE chunks of metal out of it, it looks like it is the gear that is the furthest towards the front end of the car, the gear that would first get torgue from the drive shaft in the rearend. I was wondering if it is possible to pull the axles and then remove the pig, buy a new/used pig that is a 3:55 gear like my is and just switch it out with my bad one??If someone could just let if know if this is possible that would be great, and any other important issues there maybe while removing/installing a rearend???THANKS ALOT!!!!

Well you could, but the ring gear and the pinion gear wouldn't be mated.

Three years ago I had the same thing on an 89, three or four teeth in a row were sheared. Bought a ring & pinion from a vendor and the bearing kit. The 35 is easy to set up and the instructions were real clear to follow. The hardets part was convincing myself to do the work. While you have your axles out might as well figure in wheel bearings and seals.

Didn't need a case splitter, special tools consisted of torque wrnch, both ft-lbs and in-lbs, dial indicator, and pipe wrench and big cheater bar to hold the yoke while crushing the sleeve.

Good luck,
Tom

Believe it was ~$400 total because of the wheel bearings and rear brakes.

I would not use one from a junk yard. The amount of labor involved was too great the risk of it being noisey and having to do it all over again. The job took me all day on jack stands, including dropping off the pinion, bearing and axles at the machine shop to press off & on.

WELL WELL WELL, first things first liquid wrench EVERY BOLT FIRST ATLEAST TWICE!!today started at 8:00am taking the rearend out, got it out in about 30mins, drum to drum. loaded up the axle, went to 4 different junks yards to get the right one, the 4th junk yard had the exact rearend that my was(it was a hard one to find) bought the rearend for $265 out the door, and that is also drum to drum, took the rearend home, cleaned everything up on the one from the junk yard, wire brushed it, wire wheeled, changed fluid in the pig, painted the pig cover black, took the drums, shoes, hardware, off my old rearend and used it on the new(junkyard) rearend. Wire brushed just about everything to remove all of the rust. Geased up all the new parts, bought 2 new brake lines total cost about $10. A lot of time was spent on taking off the brakes and cleaning them up and reusing them on the new rearend. We put all the brake parts on while the axle was out of the car, then connected all the brake lines. then we were ready to try to install the rearend, Bloted right up no problems at all, U-bolts went right on, shocks lined right up, drive shaft then was put back in. connected the brake lines back up, and it was ready for bleeding of the brakes and adjusting the brake shoes. didnt finish the job until 11:15pm, that is non stop working, 15mins for breakfast and 15 for dinner, but trust me if any one is looking to just throw a rearend in and not do it the right way it would only take 5-6 hours, but we did it the right way cleaned every part, removed 80% of the rust and sprayed each part we could with clear Lacquer so it would rust as fast. Everything runs great now, no noise, seems like a good fix to the problem!!!!!any other questions feel free top email me at [email protected]

Hey, where are you? I know of a BUNCH of jeep parts around here (1/2 hour north of Grand Rapids) if that's not too far let me know. I'm sure we can scare you up a rear end. I know of a 94 sport with auto trans. should be the ticket for your limited. OFF TOPIC want some white limited rims?
email me [email protected] I'll give you the guy's number and you can call him Monday morning.
